Moirville - 0

The reality show IS showing "The real Scott and Tessa." Like it or not.

Maybe not how he thinks though.

I just think that when he said "Like it or not" he's saying, SORRY, we're STILL not together. Sorry, I have a girlfriend. Like we're all still clutching our hankies over that one. That's another way this reality show dates itself. It's not 2010 anymore.

Really Scott - what is the real you people are seeing here? Are any fans crying themselves to sleep because for the seventeen billionth time we're told or shown he and Tessa aren't together?

How the fuck do you win this? What are they winning? How do you win against reality? You can't. What are they winning?

I don't know, I feel as if the real "like it or not" applies in a way Moirville doesn't care about or focus upon. I feel like there's not many tears shed in the fandom this evening over shamming on the W network.

Sure, watching this thing, a few dinners may repeat, but I think whatever sadness there is isn't over the pathetic acting out in Episode 1. The sadness stems from the losing struggle some fans have with trying to give Tessa and Scott the benefit of the doubt. Trying to believe their personalities reflect their character. They seem to have such nice personalities. There's a struggle some fans wage with the possibility that Scott and Tessa's personalities mask their character. If fans are losing anything, they're losing that struggle, not losing to Moirville.

And as usual this struggle - this fan reaction, also makes fans feel stupid and foolish. That's how it usually plays out with Virtue and Moir.  There's nothing like struggling to like, benefit of the doubt, or exonerate people who go far far out of their way to show everybody they WANT you to hate them. These people (Virtue and Moir and Moirville) do seem to want that.

It does seem as if fans aren't really good enough to like them, not good enough for the simple fan/athlete dynamic. Appreciation on that level is worthless to them.

Fans are something they use to assert their superiority. Scott and Tessa do it in their lies about fans (all during Carmen), Scott's recent remarks on the reality show do it ("Like it or not"). They're superior, so they need something against which to demonstrate their superiority. Scott and Tessa have skating for that, even as they lose at every outing to DW. What does Moirville have?

The fans.

So fans must be made to continually feel bad.

Isn't that the Moirville pattern? Isn't that ALL fans have been good for? Look at us and feel bad. We're smarter and better. Fuck you for caring, joke is on you.

I know a lot of fans struggle with hating the sham while liking Scott and Tessa, and I don't think that feels like a win to Moirville and Scott and Tessa.

Liking someone is a feel good sort of thing. They want people feeling bad. Making others feel stupid is their power trip.

I don't think this reality show succeeds, because people just aren't that stupid anymore, so that was and will continue to be a Moirville fail.

But it is sad. We see what they're doing here and why, and nobody likes feeling sad, so Scott's right, we don't like it. But not because of Cassandra. But because it's sad. There's no other word for it.

Also, with this reality show, the second hand embarrassment is huge. You know how sometimes Scott is a little TMI on camera in Kiss'n'Cry's - those times (not in recent times, but past times) when he's trying to be slick or cagey but you can see the wheels turn from space and you kind of feel bad that he's so exposed and doesn't know it, cause he thinks he's being smooth?

The reality show is like that, only without the feel bad for them part.

It reminds me of this. A friend of mine was playing a video game with a little kid. A LITTLE kid (I don't play them at all, so this is a second hand description).  He was looking at his screen, trying to get his bearings before his opponent (the little kid) found his location and wasted him.  He looks over at the little kid's screen, and the kid's POV was - the kid was right there, watching him get himself together, waiting on him. It's like he's sitting there at the center of the target and the kid is just waiting out of fair play.

Moirville feels like this. Watch Scott enact his fake relationship in order to fool US. And fans are just - oh geez. This is who he is. I wish I didn't know. It's that stupid people thinking they're smarter than the people they're fooling thing, when it's actually the other way and they haven't figure it out yet.

It's like watching someone's fantasy, only in this case, it's the fantasy of driving that roller coaster. Or it's like the time the characters in 30 Rock fooled Tracy Jordan into thinking he was going into space by locking him in a capsule and playing sound effects outside while rocking it a little bit. Scott is Tracy Jordan with the "look at me and my girlfriend here."

Or like somebody thinks they're driving the roller coaster, but they're in a stand still cart while shit is projected on a green screen, but they can't tell, so they keep on bragging.

  1. show has convinced me theyre not together. they lose sthg off the ice. and scott likes this Cassandra girl. that's very obvious. do you really think the reality show producers would show them drive up separately one day, and then ignore them driving together every other day. get over it. theyre not together at all. why doesn't she have a guy too? I mean really

In real real life, Tessa and Scott are very married to each other.

    2. For your sake I hope you're trolling. I can't believe that after all these years, people still believe that what they're shown in these reality shows is...reality. It's so far from reality it's in another universe. In this case, the universe of overdramatized ridiculousness and lies, lies, lies. It's storyboarded and scripted beforehand. VM are embodying pre-arranged characterizations that are loosely based on their real personalities, emphasis on the term "loosely."

I assume the majority of the skating world is viewing this show as the farce that it is. Like the 30 Rock of figure skating, but the really badly written version that was laughed out of the room at writers' meetings.

    3. I understand there's couch canoodling. So let's look at this. The producers come in and set up an entire morning talk show's worth of camera equipment and train it towards Cassandra and Connor's sofa. Then Scott and Cassandra sit on it and canoodle. And that's how the camera is "following them around in their normal life" except for the part where they're running cables and laying cardboard and gaffer tape. Otherwise, just like life.

It totally feels like 30 Rock, doesn't it? Scott's Tracy Jordan.

Heavy is the head that eats the crayons.

I swear they are mining the emotional, fear-induced posts on the message boards for plot points. That anyone buys anything V/M are saying or trying to embody in this show cracks me the hell up. I would feel sorry for the people who believe it but by this point I think the blindness is mostly willful.

    6. And a lot of it is fronting. I already know for a fact (having communicated with some of them personally over the years) that there are fans who buy into it on public message boards even unto speculating about maybe some day, who sing another tune in private. Any message board that has screen names is political. There will be people pretending to buy into it as long as Scott and Tessa sell it because they don't want "the other side" or arrogant know it alls to be right.

    7. I do not know why Tessa's lonely, reflective, solitary me routine she's enacting on this show is obnoxious, but it fucking is. That girl needs to get the fuck over herself. It's one of those things where I'm feeling it before I can nail down why I'm feeling it, but let me tell you, I trust the feeling. It goes right along with all her other fake, and not only her fake, her aggression with it. Seriously, Jenna Maroney should be playing her at this point. Tessa needs to un-wedge her head from up her own ass.

Also, I'm thinking THIS is the sort of shit that would turn off a judge - or at least push someone ahead of Virtue and Moir. The arrogance. And the treatment of the public. Every other skater in figure skating is working their ass off to show appreciation to the public. Who isn't? In Canada, you've got pretty much EVERYBODY but Scott and Tessa. Instead they do this shit. If they think they're fooling people that this is some sort of gesture towards the fans they're stupider than we've ever dreamed, and I think we've dreamed big.

This comes across every bit as hostile and phony as it actually is. It reeks of it. We can tell the difference between this 30 Rock-ish/SNL ridiculousness and, say, the Shibs.

Scott and Tessa, it's true, really stick out as assholes in this crop of skaters. Who's assier than they are?

She can't even tell the difference between herself and someone else. She's acting out some role of a super protective, privacy seeking personality but is unable to see past how she wants to feel and how she wants to see herself, even when there's a small child WHO IS NOT HER in the mix. Kate, you did a great job.

  5. I think it's kind of hilarious in a sad and pathetic way how they (Tessa and Scott) keep trash talking about Meryl and Charlie, when four years ago leading up to Vancouver 2010, all four of them were repeating over and over how they're "best friends" and "not rivals". I guess winning an Olympic medal can get into a person's head like that sometimes, but really? As much as Tessa and Scott seem obnoxious (Tessa more so), I have a hard time buying THIS much obnoxious-ness from them. A complete 180.

    1. I like to think Meryl charitably volunteered for the role as judgey observer. She and Charlie could have declined to participate and the W network couldn't have shown them, and certainly DW would have been under no obligation to clear away for Scott and Tessa's cameras.

So Meryl (very likely) gets a few dollars she can donate to a Detroit charity (that's what she'll do with it, right) or maybe inspired by Virtue and Moir she can write a check to Mental Health America.

    1. Yes, there's definitely something wrong. Not just - what a bunch of assholes wrong, but seriously wrong. They are deeply fucked up. It's not funny. It's not what crazy kids or in for a penny in for a pound. There's serious problems in their psychological make-up and their environment. None of this makes skating look good either. I wonder if skating has even seen anything remotely like this. Skating has a lot of crazy but this is more than the run of the mill skating crazy. It's the juvenile scripting and role playing, the inept performance, the trying to get people off and turn them off in turns, it's how far they up the ante and how ineptly they commit to it. Everything is seriously creepy. The part where they stroke each other to get used to touching because somebody hit them with the amnesia wand after Carmen and the Latin dance. These are real people slowly doing that on television so viewers will what - jerk off? Then there's the Cassandra stuff which is supposed to be the boner shrinker.

You couldn't make this up. Tina Fey, maybe, but her show was a farce. Scott and Tessa are doing this naturally. This is not normal. And it has nothing to do with their circumstances as elite skaters raised in the sport in a rarified environment. If they were never skaters they would still be disordered personalities. That's more and more obvious.

  9. Not sure what Scott is trying to achieve. Or Cassandra for that matter. The fans won't like her ( most of them seem to ignore her in their comments on other boards and the ones who acknowledge her only point out that she looks like a Tessa clone.
And now we're told they don't feel the chemistry between them and it's a struggle. They don't even want to touch each other. Guess my eyes cheated me all these years of Scott fondling Tessa off ice on camera for everyone to see.
Many fans will feel cheated because they believed in VM's chemistry and won't be emotionally invested in their programs anymore. They gave up the one thing DW could never take away from them in order to parade around Cassandra. Well at least now we know Scott isn't gay. Though making out with your girl on national television to prove you're not gay is probably the gayest thing one can do.

    1. It's like - we just saw Carmen! Did they give us collective amnesia? I don't mean - we saw Carmen - that proves they're married and fucking!

We saw Carmen! That's the product of a seventeen year relationship as ice dance partners and dancers! You can't perform that choreography without a level of comfort with on-ice physical intimacy. NO ice dancers can really succeed without a level of comfort with on-ice physical intimacy. Charlie may not be able to look Meryl in the face but he has no problem sticking his hand up her leg six inches from her crotch because that's where it needs to be so she doesn't go ricocheting into the stands.

Ha ha to Scott proving he's not gay. Congratulations Moirs!

I don't know though, I think there are worse things, and every day Scott and Tessa demonstrate about a billion of them.

I'm feeling better and better about Sochi, which really marks me as a fan no better than the "worst" fans who are all about personalities and not the skating. But I don't think I'm alone in believing Scott and Tessa sort of project the idea that as long as the skating is on point, the integrity part is fair game, and it's really tiring trying to make it work. We don't all compartmentalize as well as they do, but, OTOH, how many in the fandom are actual pyschopaths? It's probably a good thing we struggle to reconcile their skating attributes with their absolutely foul p.r.

      Delete
    2. I must agree with the 3:29 poster - their chemistry is the one thing they had far and away above D/W, and to market THAT as a "sham" is extremely poor timing heading into the Games.

  10. Everything was so scripted.

Unbelievable they also scripted a makeout sofa session. This is how VM market their connection? Oh right, they don't have connection after all. Imagine, after 17 years of the best connection I've ever seen, it went away for the sake of pushing an agenda that has nothing to do with skating. Because that makes so much sense and the fans couldn't wait to see fake drama and Scott running away from Tessa.

    ReplyDelete
  11. They're trying to win. They come from an extremely bizarre, unto grotesque, environment.

Go back to the Shoeless Joe's "promotion" done by Scott. A promotion is meant to appeal - appeal, not insult and turn off - appeal - to the market, to potential customers. Show us what's great about your place. Tessa's promo did it - in part because The Bungalow proprietors weren't too good to show respect to people watching. They were freaking DRESSED UP. Their place was well lit and looked immaculate. They had their chef painstakingly showing Tessa how to prepare a popular menu item. So kudos go to those who run The Bungalow more than to Tessa. They're professionals.

Shoeless Joe's wanted the promotion; we didn't go there with guns and say have Scott make a commercial. So Scott mumbles his way through an under-rehearsed spiel in a dimly lit space, averting his eyes and looking at the ceiling. Ultimately he shuffles on over to the bar area where there are Moirs sitting with their BACKS to us, because that is hilarious. He mutters through a recitation of his favorite dish and at the end the Moirs (cousin Cara and cousin Janet) turn and wave at the camera in semi dark with smirks on their faces.

That's not normal. I don't mean that's not normal as in "special." That's not special. There's something wrong. They shove themselves into the spotlight because apparently they need a huge platform to showcase their contempt for everybody else. Look at us so we can show you how much better we are than you. They don't really have anything to show us though.

It's naked with them. They don't even have the rudimentary sophistication to cover it up or make the contempt subliminal. They wear it on their sleeves.

  12. On twitter a lot of people commented that the girlfriend was a plot twist... and I believe she's exactly that. A reality TV show of a couple that gets along who are friendly with their biggest rivals would not be a TV show. They need to set up the plot twist. The scenes with Tessa working out and Scott cuddling are setting up the love triangle that will drive the conflict of this show. Will Scott pick the right girl in the end and win olympic gold, or is he distracted leaving Tessa in the gym for his bimbo "sandra"... so scripted it hurt. How embarrassing to have to walk into the rink or walk into Canadian nationals knowing that people have watched this shit and know it's not real....

    4. " I swear they are mining the emotional, fear-induced posts on the message boards for plot points. "

A very astute observation. I remember some comments a couple months ago, based on Cassandra tweeting about cuddling on the sofa, where people were wondering if the show would feature that kind of thing. Well whaddayaknow. Those were comments I had only seen here on the blog, by the way.

It makes me wonder what other things that have been speculated here were used for setting up their scenes or plots. There's a very strong feeling of "gotcha" to this show. Why would they do that unless they're in on the lies and fan-mocking? (Or more specifically, blog-mocking.)

It also begs the question are the writers and producers of this reality show reading the blog? In that case, either they didn't follow up with their own investigation to know what is true, or they DO KNOW what is true and they signed on with VM to aid in their hoaxing.

I'm leaning toward believing TPTB at the Wnetwork know the truth and they like Tessa and Scott so much they don't mind helping them out this way. A pox on all of them.

    5. Anon at 5:53 am - couldn't agree more. Great job VM and the W network. The USFSA is high fiving themselves today. Let's see who didn't we alienate in this episode for a variety of reasons. I guess this is Scott's way of giving back to the sport. And what a way to honour your coaches, trainer(s), choreographers, physical therapists and mentors. Tracy Wilson and Jim Virtue probably called in sick today. If I was Marina Zoueva - I wouldn't be impressed. And I cringe to think what Patrice Lauzon and Marie-France Dubreuil think. And for what?
This was an opportunity to show their love for skating and instead it looks like a bad season of Glee.
Its not even the girlfriend thing - it's just bad all around. Perhaps it might get better but I doubt it.

I'm not sure about the triangle idea. Cassandra did put up that profile picture of them in Florida after the GPF, when filming was wrapped. If she were slated for a break-up with Scott I don't think she would have done that?

I'm thinking since the gf was introduced right away and Scott says they're "hot and heavy" (did they have to put that in? So juvenile!), now they have to include her everywhere to give Scott more opportunities to show off his "hot and heavy" canoodling skills. Tessa will just continue being lonely and looking for a bf. I bet she goes out on some "dates" or even double-dates with Scott and his gf.

Common denominator is right. VM being their usual classy selves when it comes to relationship narratives.

      Delete
    7. The W Network only needs deniability. They probably have it.

Although Scott and Tessa have been in the sport a long time and have a lot of friends, I don't know if even their skating friends and connections had the full picture of their psychological dysfunction any better than we did before.

It's coming out now, that's for sure and it's mortifying, and anyone IN the sport who watches the show can clearly see the dysfunction for themselves unless they decide to deal by seeing it as comedy (I can see Moirville going there but it really isn't that funny).

How visible was Scott and Tessa's apparent personality pathology to the skating world prior to this?

They were two Canadians gearing up for the Canadian Olympics at a very young age - that's enough of a cover story to make the sham look sympathetic. There was stuff that sort of pinged - like Scott and Jessica doing the whole Dominican photo shoot, but overall it could be shoved under business as usual for a skating team on the dl.

How they handled the pregnancy was "off" and I think may have taken people aback, but there's also a wait and see part to that, and I guess the feeling that, well, these two have decided to keep it all on the down low until after their Olympic careers are finished. Although no skaters have gone as large as they have with deception, plenty of couples have maintained the brother/sister storyline for years until the Olympics were over. The fact that Scott and Tessa come from a pretty arrogant community may have seemed to account for them going more OTT than most people.

This reality show is a whole other deal. They come off disturbed. There are animals, as well as people, that suffer from ocd, and this has that compulsive streak to it. The pattern of set up and "gotcha" is something they've done from the start. They're like compulsives who have to repeat patterns to get off. Maybe that's why they hate fans - there's a little bit of ocd in a lot of fans (montage making, fan ficing, etc.) and maybe fans feel like a mirror to them. Most skaters don't experience fans like that. Maybe Scott, Tessa and Moirville do and that's why there's such hostility - it's denial of something in them. They just look very compulsive, trapped by a compulsion to act out the same pattern even when the fuel for it has dried up. That's not really a good way to describe it but it's the best I can muster at the moment. There's something disturbed at the root of this and, obviously, psychologically impaired.

    8. Kind of makes you wonder if Meryl and Charlie knew some of what was in the reality show and that's why they've positioned themselves as strongly as they have with their connection and their work ethic. Very smart. Even if we don't BELIEVE in their connection and their work ethic, it's certainly a refreshing thing for skaters to be focusing upon and serves as an antidote to VM.

    12. "I'm not sure about the triangle idea.

I bet she goes out on some "dates" or even double-dates with Scott and his gf."

I think they'll tease the will they/won't they thing. Of course, it won't play out that way. It's going to be a multiple wash-rinse-repeat cycle of getting the fans hopes up and then dumping buckets of cold water on them.

    13. I agree with you anon at 10:47 am. You have to laugh because usually a reality show will have 2 or 3 episodes and then "jump the shark"...but yes like death and taxes - they will continue the will they/won't they scenario...Would it be bad for me to request that Marnie McBean and go and seriously bitchslap anyone and everyone that is associated with this show...another analogy that perhaps Moirville will understand...you know how their Toronto Maple Leafs sports organization makes bad decisions...that's how it feels to be a VM fan...difference is the hockey team actually makes money and will continue to do so...VMs capital keeps plunging like Blackberry's...

    14. "There's talk about how they have a very unique relationship and everybody wants to put a label on it."

There IS a label on it. "Married."

9:48 - that recap is hilarious.

    15. I love this writer. I love her describing Scott lighting candlesin his "model home" and I like her calling it pseudo date No. 3, and I also like her head exploding at "hot and heavy". I agree. There's a level of ridiculous here that actually throbs.

    16. Hot & Heavy sounds like a cheap novel. It's sadly hilarious Scott said his lines so earnestly while the camera focuses on hand-holding and kissy-face. The whole scene is stupid. The room is packed with people plus brother Connor and they have to say inane lines and Scott describes the relationship as if he's in high-school. Genuine and real my ass.

I wonder how many takes it took before the director was satisfied? Lol

    17. How was Hilborn's performance? Nobody has said.

    18. She had two short lines, spoke very quietly and was mostly scene from behind. The focus was on Scott, she could have been a doll for all we know. Not much to show off for her here. She was just there to show that Scott is getting lucky.

She was also there to show Scott would rather not be with Tessa when he goes home to London.

    20. OC at 12:49, do you think the writer might know or suspect the truth?

Someone left a comment on that article that was fairly interesting.

  13. Wasn't there a scene in Dirty Dancing were Johnny and Baby had to practice how yo touch each other and get used to each others proximity ? I could have sworn that I have seen VM's " practice session " somewhere else before. Minus Jean-Marc that is.

You're right. Shades of Dirty Dancing.

The only time everything looks and feels genuine is when they're actually on the ice, skating. Everything else is a script someone wrote for Scott or Tessa. Their little story-lines are bad fan fiction and ridiculously embellished. Even Scott making a big deal of blowing air through his cheeks to show how exhausted he is. (rolleyes)
