Transitions

What are the "steps" they're doing right before the twofer where Charlie plants it on two feet and Meryl scurries on two feet? It looks lifted from a pattern but it's not a waltz.

Into it with a two foot pull and Charlie flipping her over his shoulder, out into a knee slide. Seems about right.

  1. Similar to the rumba if you ask me (the part before the twofer). And that's not a twofer, that's a quad-fer!

    1. I thought it was the rumba too. So apropos to have no waltzing in a ballroom waltz program. A couple of rumba steps and a couple of folk dance steps. The rumba at least had edges but it took so much out of them they practically collapse into the quadfer.

  2. Since it seems that we are going back in time, can we get a break down of how superior Funny Face is? I mean it must have had loads of 1 foot skating. Right? Oh and surely Carmen was full of 1 foot skating? Can we see that?

    1. It's getting the point I can't tell a DW fan being snarky to a VM fan being sarcastic, but I'm going to go with DW uber on this one. If I'm wrong, my apologies.

I think you may be confusing program transitions that involve some 2 foot skating with 2 FOOTING EVERY FEW SECONDS FOR THE ENTIRE DAMN PROGRAM. Funny Face and Carmen both had more than one part coinciding with music/mood changes that involved 2 foot stops, I'll give you that. But the elements, and the actual skating transitions, didn't. The post above this (the Tina Fey one), that's what you can compare FF and Carmen's stops to. I still find DF's lacking, but that's another conversation. But, yes, you will find "loads" of 1 foot skating in FF and Carmen. You won't find Tessa scampering like this in the middle of a step sequence, and you'll never find her ....whatever was going on entering that spin a few posts down. But don't worry, I have no doubt OyCanada has plenty more VM gifs coming at some point.

    2. You know what 10:26pm, something tells me you haven't gone back and re-watched Funny Face and are just going by how you think it was skated, which is not helped by your apparent cluelessness about what is judged in a skating competition. I can kind of imagine you are the one who saw Marina and DW "lampoon" Funny Face in Ice Sweat and Tears and are making the mistake of thinking Virtue Moir walked their program because when DW imitated Virtue Moir, DW walked. Kind of ironic.

Oh sure I'll be happy to break down Funny Face as soon as Notre Dame is done. Since you're being snarky about "going back in time" surely you have no objection to the Giselle gifs or the upcoming 2013 world champion fd gifs. Then I'll go back in time for Funny Face.

If you're an uber, and signs are you are, since you have no defense for DW only a finger point at Virtue Moir, I imagine you somehow remember Virtue Moir two footing, walking and standing still into and out of their elements like Meryl and Charlie in everything when Virtue Moir did Funny Face. It seems to sail over your head the difference between skating into your elements and standing on two feet or otherwise cheating your transition in and out or your elements, and any other time a skater might have both feet on the ice, such as Ina Bauer (which has two edges on the ice, btw).

Can you name all the elements in a program? You've come here a few times all het up so where exactly is the analysis going astray? If your only answer to DW criticism is Funny Face I don't think that program is going to do the job for you. Maybe stop looking at how DW imitated it and check out how VM skated it, because the blog is going to and it doesn't break down like you hope it does.

Do you know why it's important not to cheat your elements and why it's good to have a lot of skating in your linking moves and transitions as well, or is the whole skating part of things and the fact that it's a sport WITH a rulebook not something you're too fussed about?

    3. omg you are not seriously imagining Carmen had two foot skating?

This kind of willful stupid resentful ignorance shouldn't be humored. If you're pissed about the Meryl and Charlie gifs too fucking bad - that is how they performed their programs. If you're eaten up with sour grapes to the point you've convinced yourself Carmen and Funny Face were two footed then you're intentionally delusional and of course far too arrogant to rewatch either program, not that you'd know what you were looking at and not that you know anything at all about this sport, as gets clearer with every comment.

I am dying to gif and screen cap Carmen. That is going to be the highlight of this entire process for me. That is a tour de force of edgework and you just showed your ass.

    1. Indeed...seriously, how is that in anyway attractive? The way he is hurling her around, he has about as much delicacy as a discus thrower.

    2. The ugliness isn't even the point. And Charlie's rough handling isn't the point, although optimum execution of a lift includes an 'aesthetially pleasing' position and smooth management of the mechanics.

The problem with the lift is multi-fold but it boils down to this - it's poor technique. It's poor mechanics as well, despite it being a much easier lift than those used by Virtue Moir (not to mention easier than those done by some other ice dancers), and they're cheating the mechanics.

Then they get maximum points for it.

An element can actually have proper basic technique and still be ugly if the skaters don't "finish" their moves - their knees are bent, feet sickled, poor posture, for instance. While failing those refinements, it is still possible to skate into an element, change your position using most of your own core stability instead of clutching onto your partner, remain still and stable in a challenging position while transitioning through positions, and your partner can be securely describing a curve in the ice or doing a rotational and you can exit out of the list onto a running edge while the two of you have poor unison together and poverty/of movement - poor leg lines together.

That's sloppiness. What's wrong with Meryl and Charlie's lifts isn't primarily sloppiness, although they're sloppy, too. The more important issue is they're doing easier lifts with obviously deficient technique and cheating the entrance as well as showing poor stability transitioning out because they can't transition out - they have to pose, knee slide or two foot.

    3. That this explanation is above the heads of most figure skating fans, commentators, and journalists is bad enough. That this explanation is above the heads of the judges (in the BEST case scenario), or that the judges understand this and willfully ignore it, is what makes me angry.

    4. it's not above the heads of commentators. I watched a Euro (not sure if it was Eurosport) broadcast of the Olympic pairs competition. When Jessica Dube's botched salchow was replayed, they showed her in the air and the comment was - all wrong there, nothing's right. IOW - she never had a prayer of landing it.

I can't remember with specificity but I sure as hell couldn't tell from her air position that she was all wrong, because she wasn't tilted which was the main tell I understood. Since reading a bit of the biomechanics, I get it. Her rotational axis wasn't over her landing leg, her shoulders weren't properly square to where they should have been if she HAD been rotating over her landing leg. I've watched other pairs competitions, seen a throw that looks ok to me in the air, but the second the release happens the commentator goes OMG (i.e. "Trouble").

The mechanics aren't difficult. You don't need to be a genius to see Charlie's fucked up in that spin in the latest post - forget that while on an inside edge he blatantly hops to keep the rotation going, forget that he blatantly has his free leg flat down on the ice before the rotation is completed (remember when VM were dropped to level fucking one at their own Canadians for something the judges pretended to see in a spin?) - Charlie is unsteady and his rotations are barely making it. His blade is rough rough rough.

Commentators, judges - they have DW glasses on. If that were Andrew Poje they'd call out every glitch. It doesn't matter how DW skate. What is obviously important is the ISU and the judges believe fans can't tell what they're doing wrong. If the team were a "lesser VM" - a team that had proper technique, used their edges, worked interdependently - like the Shibs, for example - we could all see right away their attributes and that they weren't as good as VM.

"Most fans" know DW are "different" but think it's 'style'. DW are fucking different because they are not fucking skating their program, but they do it with a lot of aggression, whatever it is. We're told they are "as good technically but different in style". Uh no - they have no technique - that is the difference. And they've won two world championships because that's apparently what figure skating is looking for - the right kind of con. The fucking reason you can't see what DW are doing, why it looks different - is they're not doing it! That's their secret! That's this whole scam's secret!
