This post is for some rudimentary straightline / stationery list comparisons between Papadakis Cizeron's lift in their Moonlight Sonata free, and those done by other ice dance teams going back to 2014.
But before I begin, the "lift" that really gets me is this:
|
Level 4. Totally legit. |
Not only is she kneeling on him, she's sitting on her own heels as well. Their centers of gravity are pasted together. She briefly lifts her arms perpendicular to his body line in the familiar "ta da" gesture of inferior ice dancers.* But never mind, they slop around on two feet a few times once she's out of the lift, so this is perfectly competitive with anything Virtue Moir, the Shibutanis, Hubbell & Donohue, Capellini & Lanotte - anyone - do/does. It's just as difficult, per the gods of skating. This is how far they've dumbed this down. This is what's happened to this "sport" in order to pretend there's actually competition.
By the way:
|
2005. |
Here's some straight line lift comparisons among four teams executing stationery lifts of equal difficulty.
|
VM Canadian National Championships 2014 |
How vulgar to do so much. How vulgar to make this spectacle of one's abilities. Virtue and Moir merely skate. Papadakis Cizeron
danse.
I mean even these two:
|
He's trying. She's trying. They're not "We can't do it so let's not try. Let's instead say what we do is better, without
ever saying what it is we're actually doing." |
Shibs:
|
2015. The wait for their new programs is killing me. |
|
This is Kirsten Moore-Towers/Michael Marinaro
circa 2015 levels of strain and awkward, but the
far apart, rudimentary "holds" and empty skating parts
notwithstanding, this isn't pairs, so it's ok. It's Danse.
|
Oh, let's just take a look at the Canadian juniors anon 4:05PM brought to our attention in the comments section of the post below:
|
Olivia McIsaac / Elliott Graham FD 2017 Ontario Summer Junior |
At this stage I think ice dance should just come full circle and return to compulsories. Not compulsory dances or pattern dances, but something like the compulsories singles skaters did in the 1980s and before. A sort of pre-competition to get the skating part of this discipline out of the way before the glamorous bits. Teams will trace edges and patterns on the ice in front of judges who will examine the tracings and place skaters accordingly. Well, not edges and patterns, plural. AN edge. Just go out there and hold an edge for - let's say three seconds. Then all the teams go out on the ice in turn and do whatever the hell they want. They just have to do something in the "style" of figure skating, which is about what we have now - not actual skating. All the skating stuff was really unfair to the athletes who couldn't do it well, and unreasonable to expect from figure skaters.
*Patented by Meryl Davis.
Yeah, lifts-wise, P/C get smoked by other teams.
ReplyDeleteNot according to the rules! According to the rules it's just as difficult because the exit has a complication. Now the exit doesn't really have a complication because she's already out of the lift when he's flipping her to and fro, but according to the rules I guess since her skates didn't touch the ice yet, she's still exiting.
DeleteMy favorite part of the curve lift is the entrance. She flings her upper body upward in a movement mimicking a sharp jump and turn into the lift, but look at her lower body. Nothing going on.
HE is also out of position, so the lift is over, but until her skates touch the ground, the lift is technically still a lift, so he can just swing her and twist her while holding her under the arms and ice danse calls it a lift exit with added difficulty.
DeleteI cannot believe that lift in your first gif is a level 4 and will probably receive +3 GOEs. God. Ice Dance really is a joke.
ReplyDeleteI was flabbergasted when I saw it. It was 2 or more seconds in when I realized, holy shit, that is their curve lift.
DeleteCan't wait for the sanctimony about how much more subtle and exquisite are the attributes they bring to the sport.
Slap to the face with that L4 lift. I mean, Really?
ReplyDeleteWow just realized that vm lift in 2005 is more complicated than all of pc "lift".
ReplyDeleteYes. They change positions while in the lift. Scott continues in position and starts rotating. Nobody pretends that when the girl is totally out of the lift but if you hold her under her arms off the ice and flip her around a few times, you've done something there and we can call it a complex exit. That's just obscene.
DeleteAwww isn't that cute-15 (or 16) year old Tessa has better body control and core strength than adult Gabby. Little old Scott who probably just hit puberty has better edge work than his older counterpart.
ReplyDeleteI feel absolutely embarrassed for Ice Dance. Oh my sham.
14 year old Tessa, 16 year old Scott.
DeletePC long is so slow in the beginning. Those twizzles are glacial. It's gets sloppier as the program progresses. I am also in show about the lift.
ReplyDeleteThe PC ubers will say that they are bringing emotion and their elements are woven into the program so seamlessly, you don't notice the difficulty. They are "danSing!"
ReplyDeleteI can't with this shit.
They really can't make that argument. They can simply say it's the rules, which it is, but everybody can see the feeble components of those lifts. She is hoisted onto his knee and climbs up into position from there for the stationary, and for the curve lift she flings her arms into the air and turns but is actually pulled into position by Cizeron. It's smoke and mirrors. All the obvious issues with her lack of control of her body and how they are both bent forward at the hips with their butts jutting in opposite directions kind of distracts from the fact that as a skater, he is no prize himself.
DeleteYup. That's what happened during. d/w and it will happen again with p/c. Sick of this s*** too
DeleteI think it will happen again with P/C only to the extent that they will receive extremely high scores and end up on the podium. I don't think they will defeat VM or VM would never have returned, let alone returned to train at Gadbois. There is nothing Gadbois has or had to to teach them, and they're well aware of it. They'd have stayed retired.
DeleteI agree OC. The only reason I agree is bc the carmen lift is in and they were forced to remove it for the 2014 olympicc. and at the olympics they were forced to two-step the straight line. all to make D/W win not total bullshit.
DeleteWhat would be even more interesting would be looking at some lifts that have been called a 2 or a 3 and compare them to PC's level 4 lifts.
ReplyDeleteThe only other team I can remember having such easy lifts and getting level 4s is IK (2010-2013 FDs).
L1 at Skate Canada --> https://youtu.be/q4Y4bbvC9wc?t=2m34s
DeleteYou're kidding. They just just have choreographed their errors, whatever happened there. (I can't see it.) For example, if one of them has a tendency to wobble or hitch, they should have just been prepared to fling their arms up or throw their heads back so everyone's like "Oh, they meant to do that." I hope that lift is L1 cause something happened, and that's not the base value.
DeleteNot the BV -- they got L4 at US Classic. No explanation ever appeared, of course, but best guess was a failure to hold their difficult poses for three or more seconds.
Deletedoes anyone know 1. when the shibs will debut their programs and 2. when VM and PC will meet before grand prix, if ever?? thanks
ReplyDeleteI think Shibs debut at Cup of Russia. VM and PC were both top 3 at Worlds, so can't meet each other until GPF.
DeletePer the wiki entry posted by 7:26 below, Chock & Bates, W&P, VM and PC are all at the Internationaux de France (formerly TEB).
Deletehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017%E2%80%9318_ISU_Grand_Prix_of_Figure_Skating#Ice_dance
ReplyDeleteThank you. Weaver & Poje, Chock & Bates, P&C and Virtue Moir all at the French Grand Prix? Let's see how shameless the judges will be giving P/C astronomical scores. I'm embarrassed in advance.
DeleteNo, V/M have SC and NHK. Here's the grid of GP assignments: http://www.isu.org/docman-documents-links/isu-files/event-documents/figure-skating-4/2017-18-6/gp-6/series-files-10/entries/7514-gp-icedance/file
DeleteNo meetings until the GPF by ISU rules.
Thanks.
DeleteWell, it's happened. Fans swapped out MS with P/C's music from last year and played it over this season's choreography. Absolutely ridiculous how P/C get so much credit for being innovative when clearly it's the same shit skating to different music. Interestingly, I thought this year's "choreography" goes better with last year's music.
ReplyDeleteAll the V/M haters go on about how terrible MR is? Please-at least they try different types of programs. I am so sick and tired of the skating community kissing ass and spewing about the great P/C.
There are some fans who are adamant that the programs are completely different. No, the music is different, the skating is the same. They're doing lyrical contemporary in a soft style, the end. Every time.
DeleteOne fan said, re the lifts, that they were sure P&C could do the more difficult lifts, but they preferred the low key lifts so as not to interrupt the artistic flow. Dudes, this is an athletic competition at Olympic level. You do the difficult stuff ON THE ICE.
The reality is they get L4 for doing easy shit, so they don't try to do more difficult elements. It's like D/W, they can only execute one way, one type, and any other way exposes their deficiencies. That way and type of element should not be L4, but the ISU pretends it should.
I just read about fans who swapped out the music to play over this season's choreography. Is that on youtube or another site? I didn't see links on the skating forums.

DeleteSwapped music. Enjoy.
Oh and if you can't see they are completely different programs, you clearly belong to the camp who knows nothing about art. Eye roll.
There's also this one.
