The Fifth Episode (Nothing Sacred)

I've already vented elsewhere but I've got enough in me to re-vent, and my main thing is - I will never understand how context makes it okay to throw what's valuable and sacred in your life under the bus.

Scott and Tessa treat their public relations like a toxic waste dump. Forget the insult to the public that's obvious in that. What is in them that WANTS to do that? How profound must their stupid be to believe that putting the opposite of the truth on parade protects their private lives? The opposite of being married isn't contempt. Every move they make reveals something about them I don't think anybody wants to know.

Everything they want to accomplish (or appear to want to accomplish) is possible to accomplish without this degree of contempt and degradation. It's not even that they're lying. It's the nature of their lies. Their lies are like a grotesque experiment in virtual boundary breaching. There are a million ways to convey "we're platonic" and there were a million ways to stage this "reality show" facade without copping to their actual reality, but they chose this. It's the package that is so blood-curdling with them, because it's not necessary to their agenda, so the package they chose shows us something else about them.

In addition, this reality show is pandering to the crap on the internet that Scott and Tessa claim not to read. It's another way of pissing on the public. These two - and theirs - must be epic levels of stupid to get off on one-upping internet message boards. They have a taste for humiliation that borders on sadistic. The fact that this reality show plays into message board speculation encourages the posters on those boards to set themselves up and humiliate themselves even further.

I was saying - not on the blog - that I was hoping that the absolutely hateful, stupid narrative of this reality show would make it easier to deal with the silver medal Tessa and Scott are assured of winning in Sochi, but that's not true. I don't think I will EVER be reconciled to a Davis White gold medal and the stone cold corruption that will make it reality. I'd be more at ease if B&S won gold, because they actually skate. And the very fact that the promotional push for DW absolutely ignores the fact of Virtue and Moir's existence because there's no way to acknowledge Virtue and Moir and still position DW's slated win as deserved just emphasizes how corrupt this win is going to be, and IMO, like all medals awarded this way, it's going to stick in skating's craw for decades. It's not going to be what the ISU appears to be setting up - a just this once situation and then we can all move on. Maybe if it weren't at the expense of Virtue and Moir's skating. But given that the win will be over VM's skating, it will, IMO, permanently damage ice dance long after the two teams retire.

At least Scott looks pretty.
The bright spot in this for me is Johnny Johns.
Don't cut her open. Not only will snakes and frogs escape,
the acid will melt your face.
I can't with Tessa whiffing the golf swing and Scott pretending he's going to be a redneck after figure skating.

Gross.
Here comes Scott's penis. He's not fucking Tessa except he is, and all of his friends are jealous and would love some of that action. That's his wife. But because they're pretending that's not his wife, but his platonic partner, they script a scene where all of his buddies talk about how they want to get with Tessa, because that's the sort of scene people want to act out about their wives. All hail Scott's penis.

Also, how romantically successful are Scott's "buddies"? They all act like they're in middle school and he's envied because he's the first to have a girlfriend.

At least it was a very realistic conversation a man would have about his platonic business partner in front of his girlfriend.

To be continued.

  1. I am fan Tessa and Scott, they are the best skaters for me and I like watching every their dance. I am from Europe a I dont know their personal life. Are they really married couple?

    1. Yes. They are definitely a married couple and have been married now over four years. They are also the parents of a three year old daughter.

    2. I understand these situation. As do you know, that they are married and they have daughter? They are very famous athletes and it can not keep secret.
I saw their show and I believe, that they are together.

    3. It's not "secret" as many people know, including the media that help them lie. It's simply not admitted/acknowledged on the public record.

    4. Then I dont really understand and as their fan I am sad. They are primitiv for me, sorry.

  2. How anyone can bastardize and sell out their own family, marriage, and child is something I'll never understand, but especially in the way they're doing it for this show...WHY? It's asinine.

This episode hit new levels of grossness, not just on account of the lying (which is as disgusting as ever). Also as far as how Tessa Virtue is portrayed: as a nervous, confused, desperate lump of a person who is frequently seeking validation from others and terrified of her own strength (which is downplayed anyway). And no, commenters on FSU and elsewhere desperately trying to chalk that portrayal up to "bad editing" or the "whims of the producers" - Tessa is the "driver" of this rollercoaster along with Scott. I know some of you commenters are well aware the show is bullshit and are covering for it anyway, and that's disgusting too.

Look at the scene where she hit golf balls with her brother and father. Tessa has a lovely, natural golf swing. That's not a surprise, she seems like a very natural athlete. She was out there being filmed whiffing on a swing, not wearing golf shoes, and yukking it up about how embarrassed she was that the guy at the golf shop told her she needed men's shafts for her clubs because she has a lot of power behind her swing. Why is that embarrassing? God forbid Tessa acknowledge she has talent and power or anything. The shaft conversation is juxtaposed with scenes of Scott shooting pump action shotguns into the air and we don't need Freud for that now, do we? Then he and his buddies talk about Tessa like she's some prize to be won while the fake girlfriend sits back on the ATV looking sullen and powerless herself. Does she get any other lines other than "I missed you" and "I'm so excited to see you, be with you, you, you, Scott, Scott, Scott, Scott," blah, blah? Nope.

What the fuck with this show? The decision to publicize their lies the way they are is bad enough. But the way it's framed makes it even more grotesque.

God its like Tommy Wiseau wrote her lines. So much for women's network. also Scott friends look sooooo creepy and lecherous.

    3. Isn't that how things worked for her when she was all of 7?

    4. She also reminded us that all of her muscle might disappear after she retires and she'd be stuck with men's golf clubs. Not only is Tessa a frigid, terrified, useless lump of nothing, she's going to get flabby after Sochi. Nothing to see here folks. Tessa Virtue is a pile of shit.

Since this show is the inverse of everything real when it comes to what they say about themselves, what has made Tessa decide she better split herself in two for this show - one half lying down and the other backs up the steamroller that flattens her into a rancid slick of human waste? She has a fucking DAUGHTER. Is this what she's going to tell her? If you're talented and pretty, run yourself down so people don't think you're vain.

    5. Anon at 10:28 - great post. - what the fuck with this show basically summarizes their whole pr. It's interesting to even see folks on FSU who thought the first couple of episodes were fine but now they are questioning it as well. Basically Rob Ford - mayor of Toronto is getting better advice than VM (that's how bad it is). We all knew this reality show would be a bad idea for many different reasons - but I think it's gone BEYOND. As OC pointed out - they could have easily hit the platonic theme without the personal assassinations. Marketing - fail...And I wish folks would stop with the we just need a Tessa show...I haven't seen the show yet but have Scott's brothers made an appearance yet?

      Delete
    6. As of now, with two episodes left to air on Thursday, we have not seen either one of Scott's brothers.

Of the main players in the immediate family, the following have yet to make an appearance:
      Charlie Moir+family
      Danny Moir+family
      Cousin Cara
      Cousin Sherri
      Kevin Virtue
      Jordan Virtue

Also, although not family, I'd like to give a special shout out to the ShibSibs from not appearing in this mess of a show.

      Delete
    7. And I screwed that list up. *facepalm* Cousin Cara should have been Cousin Leanne on that list. Cara, as we all know, put in an appearance in the SC ep.

    8. I am hoping against hope the Shibs do NOT appear. I'd like to know one of the skating teams at Arctic Edge has a brain in their heads. The Shibs have spent much of the past few years reaching out to the public and to skating fans via self-produced youtube videos. If they participated in and enabled this hoax they'd be corrupting all of the good will they've built up over the past years. They, too, have a brand, and it's not as sell outs and liars.

    9. So do you think it was stupid of DW to appear?

    11. DW had nothing to lose. DW is also playing fast and loose with p.r. If Meryl is implying she's dating Fedor, that's bullshit (recently she said she's seeing a skating coach). DW do a lot that's shifty - just not in the pr of their personal life and they don't go (so far) as OTT as VM. DW are in the middle of the shiftiest judging scandal in figure skating history but because they're American, the North American media is co-signing it.

The Shibs aren't slated for gold, and my (hopeful) guess is that because their Shib Sibs productions are important to them, their credibility with the public is also important to them, and they want to steer clear of something that sets out to not just hoax the public, but have sport with the public. Yes, credibility can be a "brand" - terms like credibility and so forth are just empty labels to Scott and Tessa - but credibility can also be a real thing. My hope is the Shibs are the long term thinkers at Arctic Edge and don't believe helping out their training mates with a wholesale scam on the public is something with which they want to be associated, especially if Alex and Maia hope to be involved in media after skating.

      Delete
    12. Meryl Davis has seen fit to tell the public that her boyfriend understands the sport really well and has a great respect for what she does.

Guess that means there's a chance she's actually dating Jessica Dube.

    1. The only way a scandal happens is if VM skate perfectly and DW make egregious mistake(s), yet the latter will still get gold. And even then the US media might play it off that it's because of the complicated new system (which has been around for more than a decade, hello).

    2. Anon 12:14, I was reading the same thing on the V/M thread on FSU...and that P/B could sneak in for the bronze if B/S have a fall.

This is exactly like 1998, when Bourne/Kraatz were told weeks in advance they wouldn't medal before they even stepped on the ice. Based on their performances (at least their OD, which was horrible), maybe they didn't deserve medal, but that's not the point. The point is that they were TOLD in advance of the competition that they weren't going to medal is a fucking joke. The only reason that the whole judging controversy got attention was because they were the wronged North Americans against the big, bad Russians.

THIS "SPORT" IS A FUCKING JOKE.

    3. I read that and considering the source has a track record of lying, I don't know how much credibility to assign this person's statement. Furthermore, how much of a stretch is it to pretend to have a source for a result that has been telegraphed for over a year? EVERYBODY in skating is telling us Virtue and Moir have no shot at gold, including figure skating people in Canada. They don't say that - they just let it be known DW are likely to win, based on the fact that they've been winning. I've never seen a skating competition preview where there is supposedly another skater or team close in ability to another team and yet it's unanimous that only one team has a shot at winning. What the hell. The GPF told us how it's going to go down - we don't need people pretending they have sources in Lausanne.

      Delete
    4. Someone else repeated what was said on FSU on twitter. The source seems to be from the Russian FSO forum. They claim this board as a lot of credible insiders and this info was from Lausanne. I don't know what to make of it because what they're saying is a podium that many have predicted since worlds last year. I also take into consideration that FSU also claims to have a lot of credible insiders, but we know that's not true.

    1. P.S. Everyone conveniently forgets the Beverly Smith interview in which Virtue Moir described their closeness to Marina and told how, even though they were away from Canton, they were in contact with Marina while the Igor situation was developing.

      Delete
    2. P.S. - those who hate Marina now, pulled straight out of their fantasy life and supported nowhere else, have decided VM just "went along" with "DW's decision." Let's suppose it was DW, and only DW, who opted for Marina (and the article doesn't say the choice was down to only them - the article has omission as well as assertion).

VM would have been prevented from following Marina - how? The idea that they naively just went along with coaching decisions made by others, and if Igor had remained they'd have stayed with Igor, is a projection/fantasy/fan fiction by people who dislike Marina for reasons they've made up, and therefore think VM must have similar reservations.

That scene was just gross in an infinite number of ways. Tessa is Scott's wife and the mother of his daughter, but they chose to act out that scene where her buddies treat her as some sort of object to bang? Gross.

In addition to the gross in that scene, IMO, the bad acting wasn't enough to cover up that Scott didn't really fit in with these guys too well. There wasn't the rapport there that you would expect to see with a group of guy best buddies, and Scott very much seemed to be the outlier. I also seriously doubt that Scott is really going to live a redneck, country boy life on the farm.

BTW, Scott did a horrible job handling that gun. He is not a person who has ever spent a lot of time shooting a gun. It showed in everything he did with that gun.

"There are a million ways to convey "we're platonic" and there were a million ways to stage this "reality show" facade without copping to their actual reality, but they chose this. It's the package that is so blood-curdling with them, because it's not necessary to their agenda, so the package they chose shows us something else about them. "

I knew this show was going to be terrible from the second I first read the press release. However, it has far exceeded my worst expectations. It's not just the platonic crap and lying about what they are to each other, but the other messaging that has come along with it. Women are meek and self-deprecating and men are the bosses who control everything. Tessa and Scott have a little daughter. Are these the kind of messages they want her taking to heart? Did they stop to think about the daughters of other people who idolize them and will take this bs to heart?

"I was saying - not on the blog - that I was hoping that the absolutely hateful, stupid narrative of this reality show would make it easier to deal with the silver medal Tessa and Scott are assured of winning in Sochi, but that's not true."

I had desperately hoped that this show would make me hate VM so badly that I just wouldn't care, but the closer we get to the games starting, the more clear it is that it isn't going to work.

" IMO, like all medals awarded this way, it's going to stick in skating's craw for decades. ...But given that the win will be over VM's skating, it will, IMO, permanently damage ice dance long after the two teams retire."

IMO, the OGM that DW are about to be handed in Sochi is the least deserved, least earned, most corrupt OGM in the entire history of the Olympics, summer and winter. If VM weren't around and the rest of the field was exactly as it is, then yeah, it would be easier to take this as a one-time-only deal and move on. However, in VM, we have what is the best ice dance team of all-time. That that team that can't fucking skate or fucking dance is going to be placed over VM who are skating and dancing better than they ever have is sickening. There is no way ice dance will ever fully recover from this one.

I know you think the sport will go all pious next year and mark to the letter of the CoP, after tightening CoP up and spelling things out more clearly, but I fear that to further justify what they did with DW, we're going to see some additional teams held up or brought to the forefront over better teams. I'm thinking maybe something like a CB over all of PI, HD, and The Shibs. Even once DW are out of the picture, I don't think the fall out from this is over with when it comes to the judging.

The judging trends show the opposite. This scoring inflation for non-skating is DW -specific and limited to the gold medal agenda for DW alone.

Every single other team is required to actually skate their program.

In terms of elements, even Gilles Poirier abandoned their two twizzle sets and are doing three. Why? They're continuing on in the next quad. It appears to me that once DW get their gold suddenly the hop into two twizzles will be downgraded, and bladework in between elements will suddenly matter in pcs.

    2. Hi OC - it will be interesting to see what happens next year in terms of judging. I would have to agree with anon at 9:27 am that it might not be as blatant - but the politicking will be there. And with this last quad - it sets a dangerous precedence of hey- it's our turn to benefit...and if the same judges, technical callers have enjoyed "perks" over the last couple of years..they won't mind receiving them for another quad...I also believe that there are some promising Russian and European teams coming up...who says the pendulum doesn't swing all the way to the other side...I know that a lot of folks like the Shibs and I enjoy their skating - but I don't think they will move up...It will be interesting to see how long WP, CL and HD skate for. I am not even sure if CB, GP, IK, BS go for another quad.

    2. You think so?

Whoever it is will have to be ready to burn some bridges if they're inside skating. By no means does everybody respect Scott and Tessa's choices with their various p.r. schemes, but, as the blog (and others) have pointed out numerous times, if someone rats out someone else they become untrustworthy. Who else will they sell out?

      Delete
    3. Oh no, I don't think it'll be anyone inside of skating. No one in skating is going to do it. I think it would be someone out-of-skating, closer to home. Maybe someone from Moirville who wants to extend their 15 minutes of fame a little bit longer. Maybe someone who is unhappy with the Moir's using the rink and VM's fame for power in Ilderton. Tessa's dad is an attorney, maybe someone in London as an axe to grind.

I'm just thinking there are probably people not at all involved in skating who don't like one or both families who know the deal and might one day use the sham to their advantage.
