Pyette and the "rural areas of Ontario".

Editing to say that now that I've processed the interview more, Scott went out of his way to avoid saying "Ilderton". In fact, he steered our attention to Tessa and him being "true Londoners". Always before Scott made sure we knew he bled Ilderton sod. His buddies, and "my family" are Ildertonians, but it was Pyette who asked if they'd shot in London and Ilderton. It was the perfect opportunity for Scott to get in his usual compulsive Ilderton plugs, but I don't think Ilderton came out of Scott's mouth. "Rural areas of Ontario" my ass.

And, as someone pointed out in the comments, who the hell else touts their projects with declarations about how sincere and genuine and real they're going to be? As opposed to what? When they've been something else? Have they been deceptive, manipulative assholes in other projects or something?

They always do this. Scott flops and twists and shifts like a fish on a dock, Tessa always goes where you just think if you pricked HER skin, the needle would break on the solid ice in her veins. The exceptionally weird in Scott's facial expressions are how tight and twisted his mouth is and he keeps trying to smile with it while keeping it tight and twisted.

"It [documentary] hasn't changed anything."
"If anything, it has been a positive."
The video started to cut when Scott started
scratching, hence the blur.
"The most accurate view of our lives day to day."
"You see our home life, true Londoners."
The "home life" part - boy.

"We wanted our genuine selves to show through, and I think we.."
"We wanted to be open and honest."
Tessa talks school.
Scott's face.
I didn't get to watch the Pyette interview until very late, and I mostly watched to hear what has been described as Stepford Scott. I didn't realize there was video, and after seeing it, there's no way Scott's facial expressions don't need to be preserved in sham chronicle history. Tessa's facial expressions kind of make you shiver with the level of Bot they achieve, but if one thinks along the lines of Jan from The Office (as I mentioned in comments further down), versus some sort of sociopathic refugee from the royal court of Rome, it's easier to place where she's coming from. It makes me feel better, anyway.

Bear in mind they've known Pyette for years, and there's no "journalist" more harmless.

When, as here, they have trouble meeting each other's eyes, the lying must be EPIC. Here they mostly look at each other when the other isn't looking back, or has their eyes lowered.
"It hasn't changed anything."
Did you shoot in London/Ilderton yet? asks Pyette.
"One with my family* and one with my buddies."

"Fun, fun shots there."
Oh I can't wait.
I love micro-expressions.

Based on these screen caps, Scott can suck a lemon better than Pete Campbell.

If I were storyboarding these, Tessa has killed someone after wanting to do it for so long, she can't repress her excitement (her cat swallowed the canary expression), and Scott struggles to display sympathy towards the bereaved while distracted by fear that the body has surfaced in the marina.

*Not my daughter. This is just for family and friends. Me, Tessa, my brothers, my buddies, we'll try to melodrama Tessa up a bunch so nobody notices her side isn't parading around to the degree my side is doing it, and sightings of the person social media believes is my girlfriend plus I'll talk about Tessa's hypothetical boyfriend PLUS the rural parts of Ontario, i.e., the Ingliss place, but not my kid, because she has nothing to do with any of this. She's too important. I'm sure she'll work that out. With her therapist. Or drug dealer. Or favorite bartender."

"Family" to Scott still rolls off his tongue easily as meaning his parents and his brothers. They're not compartmentalized. From the day she was born his child was a compartment. A freaking compartment.

They might be tired but both of them seem to have issues with opening their eyes. There's a ton of side eye under lowered lids - with Tessa it's more pronounced, but if you wade through Scott's tics, it's with him too. I don't think I've ever seen him lick his lips and twist his mouth this much in an interview. All he needed was a handkerchief to mop his brow.

P.S. I took the pregnancy comments/hijack off the comments section of this post. It's been discussed elsewhere on the blog many times, for one, for two the comments section isn't the place for someone to have a conversation with themselves, which is what happens when someone makes up what the blog is saying how it knows something, and then refutes it, and three, the comments section isn't the place for any participant to demand the blog convince them personally. The comments section of this post is done with that tangent.

P.P.S.

From the web on how to spot a liar:

In the most important interviews of their careers Gary Condit sucked in his lips and stuck out his tongue, Bill Clinton touched his nose about every four minutes and Enron's Ken Lay overacted and was over confident. In these public moments they gave us nonverbal cues that they were lying. They lost their credibility.

Mind Your Mouth - Mouth, Lips, and Tongue Cues
Be careful of pursing or licking your lips. Condit pursed his lips and sucked them inward more than 14 times in his famous 2002 television interview with Connie Chung. This can indicate extreme anxiety, withholding information and withholding aggression. Tight lips indicate you may be planning to keep the truth in. If you actually suck the lips part way in, you may be withholding anger. When you are nervous, your mouth becomes dry, and you lick your lips and swallow as you struggle to find the right words to say.

People tend to look up to the right to visualize or create a new response or down to the right to create the sounds of a new response. We recall information that occurred in the past by looking up to the left or down to the left. Spot a liar by listening for pauses and right eye movement. Be credible by answering spontaneously.
This interview can be repurposed as a training video for people in the spot-a-liar business. Usually training videos feature stilted actors, and Scott and Tessa are doing the job in that department too.

And what are they lying about? Their intentions (we wanted to be open and honest), and their real feelings about the show, is my guess.

I also read today how a lie involves two factors: intent, and failure to notify the other person.

No matter how Tessa spins it, and she certainly seems to set a lot of store by the veil of marketing, storytelling and performance, what she and Scott are doing is lying, and marketing a lie. There's no euphamism available, nor spin. They're not performing. They're not being characters.

In his write-up, Pyette put much of the information in quotes, thus reporting what Scott and Tessa say, not reporting in his own voice. That's how it's done.

I also found this:
Great material on lying

This is another, and even better, website discussing lying tells and the biomechanics of lying tells, and it's no surprise that Scott gives a comprehensive illustration of the major tells in the video above, but it's also striking how completely Tessa's customary way of parrying during an interview reveals somebody keeping the truth at bay. The article gets very detailed and Tessa is an almost pitch-perfect model.

Also his brothers daughters. They're not compartmentalized either.

"From the day she was born his child was a compartment. A freaking compartment."

I still can't fathom how any parent can compartmentalize their child and deny its existence. That poor little girl.

"She's too important. I'm sure she'll work that out. With her therapist. Or drug dealer. Or favorite bartender."

She's not even 3 yet, and she's been set up by her parents to have a world of issues to deal with when she's older. She's in the impossible position of being born into a family of attention fame whores with the expectation that she's to think that fame and attention are of no importance. That's before we even touch the disgusting visual output from the sham, articles talking about Mommy and Daddy going there separate ways at the end of their career, etc. Girl is going to have issues and who knows how she'll deal. Maybe VM should set aside some money for a few stints in drug rehab.

Sums it up. She will also know that her parents are earnest liars and can rationalize lying. But not to her. No, don't worry honey. We always tell you the truth.

  2. Someone in the comments of one of the posts below this one mentioned that these two could give some classic pathological liars a run for their money, but I disagree. Virtue and Moir SUCK at lying.

One of their biggest tells is how incredibly reactionary they are at all times. They spend almost as much time telling people that they aren't lying (this is us being honest, genuine, sincere, accurate, blah, blah) as they do actually spewing out the initial lies. They do not know how to dial it down to 5. Hell, they don't even know how dial it down to 9. Instead, they dial it up. I don't know if that's out of insecurity, arrogance, or just plain stupidity, but it makes it even more obvious that they're peddling a bunch of bullshit as truth to the public.

    1. This is true. Scott's face in this Pyette interview is ridiculous. Tessa's face is like a Disney cartoon villainess. They are exactly like kids who stick their hands in the cookie jar while the parent is in the other room and then holler loudly to announce they are most definitely NOT taking a cookie.

      Delete
    2. That's a rather apt description. Their families/friends also play a large part in facilitating and spreading the reactionary bullshit on social media. They oversell everything with a bull horn.

"Aren't these two just the greatest "kids" ever to walk the earth? So genuine! So honest! Can't wait to watch their documentary!"

Scott's fake girlfriends are never not at cartoonish levels of absolute fawning.

Just wait. They'll make sure to take stock of how and why they're being criticized in this thread (and the others here) and react to that soon enough. Like always.

  3. Came across this interview from back in April of 2010 that I hadn't read in a few years. This stood out to me:

    "Interviewer: Who is Scott’s idol?
TV: Tiger Woods. He’s sticking by him, I think.
SM: I gotta rethink my idols. I’m a huge Tiger Woods fan. Was – still am of his golf. He was my idol but not anymore . . . [Now?] Roger Federer."

This interview came less than a year after Tiger's infidelity scandal and the ensuing public relations fallout. Scott mentioned that he was still a fan of Tiger's golf. So that must mean...what, exactly? Scott thought Tiger's other actions were indefensible, or at least concerning enough to warrant his "rethinking his idols?" What other actions were those? His affairs? His attempt to bully and cajole people into being quiet about his indiscretions before they came flying at him in the guise of a nine iron wielded by his jilted wife?

Tiger wasn't accused of cheating at golf. He had been playing better than ever up to that point in time. The scandal that ensued from his behavior had nothing directly to do with golf. Scott basically reiterates that in his interview answer.

So what Tiger was doing was concerning enough to Scott that he decided not to publicly declare him his idol any longer. Yet masquerading around with a fake girlfriend, making sure that photos of himself grabbing her ass and kissing her, proactively shoved in the face of fans in order to convince them that he's screwing this girl despite the fact that he has a wife and a child, is totally cool, apparently.

    Remember Tiger's public apology?

"I thought I could get away with whatever I wanted to. I felt that I had worked hard my entire life and deserved to enjoy all the temptations around me. I felt I was entitled. Thanks to money and fame, I didn't have to go far to find them. I was wrong. I was foolish."

    1. Why did Scott and Tessa have an opinion about what Tiger did in his private life? They didn't know him personally. How is that Scott's business? Tiger was just marketing himself; his family man persona was a performance. It was part of his storytelling. What's wrong with that?

    1. Pyette seems very amiable and earnest, but the two of them sweated, shifted their eyes and twitched as the prosecutor had them cornered on the witness chair. What was Scott's constant mouth twisting, lip licking and eye shifting about - not to mention he talked out of the back of his throat, like he was keeping half of his words in.

I felt so bad about "My family" because it did come out naturally. He could say "My folks" or "some of my family" or "my parents and brothers and some of my family." Any other skater could do that and not have people immediately be "Oh they have a kid."

So interesting that a whole bunch of his "buddies" hung out with him in some of the "rural areas of Ontario", apparently enjoying the spotlight. The above commentator nailed it - this child is going to be told it was a good thing she was excluded and also that this wasn't very important or meaningful or real, and meantime her dad's connections and family are crawling over it, elbowing each other for attention AND busting Scott's chops, come to think of it. That's how they roll. Gagging for a share of his spotlight and a piece of Scott and Tessa but trying to play like they can take it or leave it. They're ridiculous.

    2. "he steered our attention to Tessa and him being "true Londoners". "

Among other things, this stood out to me as well because Scott is usually so big on emphasizing he is from Ilderton, not London.

These guys get so twisted and knotted up in their lies, it's a guess whether this kind of comment is trying to be somewhat truthful (he and Tessa live together in London) or is it because he knows what's coming in this reality series -- perhaps he's gone so far as to let himself be put in the position of being portrayed as living with the social media girlfriend, and she lives in London.

      Delete
    3. Or - and I speculate this is more likely - he's trying to make Ilderton look less grasping than it is. He's trying to bury the purpose of this reality show, which is to let Ilderton preen even more in the spotlight. The blog has called this out, and I've noticed this type of comment has creeped in in other discussions - that Ilderton is really riding this pony into the ground. So he's covering Ilderton's ass.

  5. Oh no, not that the Tessa-obviously-wasn't-pregnant thing again. Personally, given the changes to her body over the course of early summer-winter 2010, I find it fairly easy to believe that she was pregnant. Virtue-Moir do have a daughter. Whether or not they are behaving as maliciously toward her and the fans as this blog would have us believe is my question.

    1. The blog's characterization of their behavior is based on the public record of their behavior, which includes what they do on social media.

Is it you think they're not doing it intentionally (stings, for example, setting fans up), that they have good intentions but it comes off poorly? What makes you question how the behavior is characterized?

    2. There's just been so many theories as to *why* they're going out of their way to plaster fake personal lives on social media. Is it solely to fuck with the fans or is there another reason behind it? I agree that right now, they're just setting themselves up as basically shitty people. I just keep hoping there's another explanation out there that at least somewhat redeems them.

The care of their daughter is another thing. At the moment, they are not behaving like responsible parents. Who is doing the majority of the parenting of this child? Tessa's mother? Another unknown relative?

      Delete
    3. I think the blog has its perspective, and some fan perspectives are darker than the blog's.

The blog's POV is that keeping the child's existence hidden from the public could work out fine - presuming this child gets plenty of attention and love from her parents in her day to day life - but littering the internet with images of her father groping other women is incredibly unfair. . And there's the shit the fake girlfriends have posted and hashtagged, and the egging on from everybody around them. The tone of everybody getting yuks out of it is unfair, because the child is pre-empted from being hurt about it or having permission to think it matters.
There's Scott and Tessa constantly talking about their lives off ice and not mentioning her. His life is his gf and buddies, she's school and mommy and some of her girlfriends. Where's their daughter? Oh, she doesn't exist. They don't HAVE to say these things. They could be general.
Then, to announce a reality show (and Scott goes out of his way to call it a freaking DOCUMENTARY) and ignore her existence, - no matter how that is framed for this child, that is unfair. (And how would it be framed? That it occupied their family and community since neither Scott nor Tessa possess the balls of an Alexander Bilodeau or Patrick Chan, so better to feed the beast than draw a line? That it was a cash grab for the ISC? That it was more important to involve older kids and adults because they knew what was going on and how special it was while their daughter really doesn't? And if they used that angle, how are they going to fit in their kiss'n'cry shout-outs to Charlie and Danny's girls, who are younger than their daughter, to Charlie and Danny's girls held up for the big screen at London Worlds, to PJ Kwong doing a special article on how much Scott loves his new neice?)

    4. It would be hilarious in a laugh to keep from crying way if they haven't figured this out and figure they'll cross that bridge when they get to it. What if there isn't a healthy approach to making this okay for their kid? What if the only way to make it okay is not to fucking do it?

What Scott and Tessa have created on social media and in mainstream media - gone OUT OF THEIR WAY - are injuries waiting for their child to experience.

If she's made to believe this is NOT hurtful, then they're damaging her core values, and her sensibility, in order to protect themselves, not her. This stuff IS hurtful. The process of convincing her it isn't would damage her. They would have to shape her to be a certain type of person in order for her not to be hurt, and that's not fair.

The blog thinks that how Scott and Tessa have behaved on the internet and on the media, the images they've put out and the things they've said, are heartbreaking for this girl. And for it NOT to be heartbreaking, they're going to have to be incredibly self-serving and unfair. They're going to have to teach her to be insensitive, and here her parents are pretty damn sensitive themselves.

Could THEY do it? Could the new model "Sobbing Tessa" - what the hell happened to the gritty stoic Igor used to talk about in 2009 (when referring to how she managed her shins), the very sensitive Tessa, create a child who can blow this shit off? Good luck raising a child who thinks all of this is no biggie. And if they succeed, that's not FAIR to her.

The blog's point of view about their "treatment" of their daughter, is Virtue and Moir continue to pump out potentially injurious material onto the web, which is incredibly unfair to the kid, and will last years and years.

Just because they and their family think the internet is a toy - they suck at it - doesn't mean it's not a dangerous and damaging tool. They use it carelessly and it's sad.

Other participants in the comments section think the situation is even darker, that the child is ignored, neglected, disregarded in ways other than how the web will affect her, and made insecure by the photos her father has posed for with Cassandra Hilborn and Jessica Dube.

I also think that last is unavoidable and what would be required to make her comfortable with it isn't something she should have to learn or a person she should be made to become.

I'm one who has, at times, speculated on the darker side. What we know of VM's parenting is that they've set up time bombs for this child to deal with later on in life. Either she's hurt by all of this stuff or she's turned into an insensitive human being, which isn't fair and turns her into a lesser version of herself in order to serve the interests her parents had when she was a baby, toddler, and, soon, preschooler. That's pretty shitty parenting, and there are some of us who wonder how someone could do that to their child if they loved their child in all of the ways a parent should. So, you start to wonder if there are other bad aspects to their parenting. All I know is that I can't fathom doing to any child of mine what VM have done to theirs nor can I fathom my parents doing to me what they have done to her.

The parents are supposed to be the first line of defense when it comes to protecting a child, especially one this young, from physical and emotional harm. They've set up a minefield of emotional harm for that child. What kind of parent does that to a child?

Since I first read the descriptions for the first three trainwrecks, er, episodes, I've been thinking about the third one a lot. It's the one where they supposedly blow off steam with friends and family. I fully expect to see the nieces and pretty much everyone else in it. I keep thinking about how that child is probably going to feel when she sees it down the line, with herself the only one who was erased.

    8. Back when Tessa was pregnant, I recall thinking they'd probably find a way to quietly come out with the truth (with as little muss and fuss as possible), weather any immediate shock/fallout (which likely wouldn't last very long), and move on. Or, at the very least, I suspected they might keep the existence of the child on the down low, but also stop the fake girlfriend/platonic crap. In other words, just be their true selves but not make any major public announcements, at least as long as they continued to compete.

All of that was based on the assumption that V/M, as two married parents who had created a child together, would never use that child as a pawn in their stupid media games, insult its existence by continuing to bait the public into believing Scott was screwing Jessica Dube, or dial up the patronizing bullshit directed toward fans. I thought "kids change people's priorities, almost always for the better."

I should have known better than to make assumptions based on logical inferences. Pfft.

"Back when Tessa was pregnant, I recall thinking they'd probably find a way to quietly come out with the truth (with as little muss and fuss as possible),"

Same here. I was convinced Tessa was pregnant and was anticipating an end to all the freak side shows on social media, even if nothing was ever really acknowledged about their true status. Three years later I'm still shocked they chose to handle things by continuing with the freak side shows. And now they've actually acted them out and put them on film! The stupidity is mind-boggling.

    10. Think how TM will feel watching him blow off steam with Cassandra. I hope that's all the blowing off we see in this fucker.

A lot of people point to the Virtues - how could the Virtues allow this? The Virtues raised Tessa. Look at her. They may have gone in the other direction and treated her every emotional warp and woof like musical notes from Mozart's pianoforte. Look how well it turned out! Gold medalist, yes, but there's other stuff not as golden.

An extraordinary talent on numerous fronts, with an unusual attachment to a peer at a very young age, and very very sensitive. The past few years Tessa has 180'd from the stoic she presented as being (and was described as being by others - "tough little nut" said Marijane Strong (admiring)) - to someone who gets off describing herself as the meltdown queen. Meltdown en route to TEB 2009 (liar). Meltdown if someone moves her skate guards from where they're placed. All butt hurt over something she MADE UP about the internet (that fans thought she was like Carmen). Wiping away a tear on camera for her reality show (make-up perfect. The combination is pretty off-putting - somebody getting camera-ready for their supposedly candid emotional display. Retroactively sobbing in the dressing room over not making the Olympics in 2006 (read anything from that year - they always knew it was remote. Their focus was winning junior worlds - which they did - and then gearing up for 2010. Always. They skated fantastically well at Canadians in 2006 but were unexpectedly close to the silver medalists. It wasn't some kind of dashing of expectations. If they went, great, but their career timeline focused on junior worlds. But never mind that. She MELTED DOWN AND SOBBED HER HEART OUT in the dressing room).

"How much more can I give!" What the fuck. Somebody known as stoic and tough somewhere along the line decided drama queen was the way to go for her marketing.

Who is her touchstone? Who does she admire? Who influenced her more than anyone, according to her? Who teaches her about business? Who helped her become a young woman who can play her own self like a violin in order to manipulate public perception? Who influenced this extremely talented girl to become such a ruthlessly cold-blooded, INCREDIBLY cynical - unbelieveably cynical, calculating young woman in key aspects of her life and career? The cynicism behind how Tessa rationalizes is often blood curdling.

Who raised that? Who continues to advise that? Who validates that? Nobody in this Moirville/Virtue crowd knows cause and effect. Tessa can sit down in her psychology classes 7 years in a row and not make elementary connections - or she uses what she learns as more fuel for rationalization.

    11. The more I look at their sickly faces up there the more I wonder if "lives at home" include Scott padding out from Cassandra's bedroom with bedhead, and we're clearly meant to assume that's where he stays and sleeps in London. Those faces are walk of shame faces, or I cheated faces, sort of stubbornly shamefaced.

And then after we see that, maybe that's when Scott talking heads about how he'd keep any hypothetical Tessa boyfriend in line, just in case the Cassandra charade led people to think he didn't care enough about Tessa. I think we're going to HEAR more about Tessa's hypothetical people than see.

It's just that Scott's mouth gets incredibly twisted and weird and his face gets funny when he says "one with my family and one with my buddies." Hanging out with Moirs and then hanging out with the gang shouldn't produce that prune-faced, shrunken facial expression. He's swallowing his own mouth. If these two were actors playing compulsive liars the director would tell them to pull it back a little.

OC - with all the CONTRIVED drama (just look at the episode recaps - lack of connection, off-ice obligations dilemma, blow-off steam episode) - it wouldn't shock me if all of a sudden Cassandra shows up in Paris (TEB) to surprise Scott - cuz Paris is the city of love...and I totally agree that we are not going to see much of Tessa's family and friends...what a trainwreck and for what...the book was one thing...this show - it's a sell-out...and they know it..and crap this thing has already taken too much time and wasted energy...and you are right - they looked much more comfortable with Melissa Grelo and that Breakfast Television interview because of the topic being discussed period...it's funny their FD is basically a celebration of their skating together...this show as scripted is basically everything but the skating and not in a good way...after 17 years of ups and downs - a connection problem appears after skating an FD like Carmen - where the level of trust required for the lifts etc was nearly unprecedented, frustration appears - so they both need to spend time with family and friends and blow off steam..alrighty...I think if Scott needed to really blow off steam - he would go the rink and shoot hockey pucks at a net for an hour ..not require a whole day in the rural parts of Ontario..contrived drama...exactly what we need in an Olympic year...and to be aired before the Olympics...shakes head..

    13. The two of them will say anything. ANYTHING.

You know damn well this is about Ilderton. This is giving The Ilderton Skating Club a big cash gift. This is consolidating the Moirs' status in Ilderton for the period after Scott and Tessa exit the sport and some of the spotlight.

The reason, it seems, Scott and Tessa can say and do anything is the gold medal is the sacred chalice - as long as they have that/ have the chance for another one then nothing else matters. Everything else is grist. That 90% of their public relations is unnecessary to the pursuit of the gold medal is beside the point. It's entitlement - a perpetual get-out-of-jail-free card for them. That's definitely all his community cares about.

I know the gold medal is a big deal. To them it's like a family member becoming a media superstar - it's the type of thing that makes people crazy and the people around you crazy. Still, I haven't seen other gold medalists do what Tessa and Scott have done and are doing, particularly as regards their daughter.

I didn't really think that one of the brother's had repurposed TM's name so that Scott and Tessa could shout out their own child in the kiss'n'cry, but the alternative is just pathetic. This is part of their competitive archive - calling out to their neices while ignoring their child. She won't hear her name, but Scott and Tessa fall over themselves about the rest of the family. This is such a fucking big deal to Scott and Tessa's parents and friends and extended family - isn't it going to matter to this girl's friends and her own family when she's older? That her parents won the gold medal and skated in two Olympics and were Canadian champions? And for three years of her life her parents are littering media and the web with shout outs to family and she's edited out of the picture. Tessa can't shut up about her mother, for example, but her own daughter...

It goes in a big circle, actually. It's all okay because it's for the gold medal, or is cleansed by the gold medal. It IS very similar to what Tiger Woods said - they think they've earned the right to fuck around with core components of people's lives (their child's) because of their status in the sports world. They want to make a grab for what they can get, Ilderton does, Scott's maternal side of the family does, so they can trample over whatever. They're gold medalists. Tiger won the Masters! A bunch of times!

But then when she looks back at the gold medal journey, she's not included. Their own kid is set up to be mind fucked - told one thing, all the behavior sends another message.

    14. I know down below when one poster asked "Is their daughter still alive?" some participants were all WTF - but as crass as the question is, I get it. People are looking for a rationale. Well, maybe their child is dead and that's why they're ignoring her. It's like if the child isn't alive anymore then their behavior is more understandable because it sure isn't understandable with her alive.

We can see from Davis White what a huge fucking deal it is to want a gold medal. If Charlie had to have a sex change to get it done I'm not sure he wouldn't do it. They've gone pretty low, trying to appropriate everything said about Virtue and Moir and claim it for themselves, trying to appropriate Detroit's financial struggle into a value add for their image as the work ethic ice dancers; Tanith seemingly dialing her social media presence in Charlie's life down to flatline (that serves her interests as a commentator as well, but it also helps her promote Charlie and Meryl's soul-to-soul connection). Still, we recognize all of this as routine Olympic marketing/positioning. It's not really crawling around in the gutter and damaging anybody. Tanith is a big girl - if she's downplaying her bond with Charlie it's her choice. Detroit is a city, not a person. What Davis and White attempted with "Detroit grit" makes them look stupid, it doesn't hurt Detroit. How they responded to the LGBT/Russia situation exposes them more than it hurts someone else (specifically).

What is really off-putting about Moirville is how fucking ignorant they all are and how for them that is no deterrent. They didn't get the internet but waded right in big, creating a mess that can't be cleaned up. They don't know how to make distinctions (Charlie and Meryl are as craven as it gets, and they really stoop, but it's all inside a very clear framework). They don't understand cause and effect. They don't get context. They're flaming hypocrites with a streak of sanctimonious self-righteousness. They're the ready, fire, aim crew. The way Tessa and Scott have managed their child in all of this, they've put her right in the line of fire instead of keeping her in the clear. They don't even know the freaking difference between the two things.

    15. "The more I look at their sickly faces up there the more I wonder if "lives at home" include Scott padding out from Cassandra's bedroom with bedhead, and we're clearly meant to assume that's where he stays and sleeps in London. Those faces are walk of shame faces, or I cheated faces, sort of stubbornly shamefaced."

"it wouldn't shock me if all of a sudden Cassandra shows up in Paris (TEB) to surprise Scott - cuz Paris is the city of love..."

It wouldn't suprise me at all to see both of those scenarios actually happen on the show.

I think this thing is going to be worse than anyone imagined it would be when it was first announced. I think we all hoped or assumed that off-ice things would be glossed over and the focus would be the skating and training. It sounds like it's the exact opposite. What this thing is is acting out the social media sham crap on national television.

They have completely sold out and what for? There's no single good reason for this.

Another thing I wonder is how much time this has taken away from their daughter. They already have all the time spent training, meeting obligations (the RBC thing, etc.), traveling to competitions. It didn't seem like they had much time left to spend with her. Now, they've cut into that time with her even more by filming this show. If I were them, I wouldn't want to miss out on any more time with my child than I had to, especially during these early, precious years. It's just another way she's getting cheated.

      Delete
    16. Well, it's contriving "lives at home" because they're sure not showing us their lives at home. The one we'll see won't include their child, and depending on how complicit this production is with Tessa and Scott's lies, the child will have to be kept away from the production, or not interact with Scott and Tessa in front of the production as their child. So that does cut into her time, and it's all to produce a show that is cutting her out. You can't paticipate honey because you don't exist. Well, some fans think you must be dead or we wouldn't be doing this, but those fans are silly.

    17. You know what else is really gross - Scott's interactions with the sham girlfriend are bait. Not sham bait, just bait. They use it to get attention. They think it's an attraction, IOW. How far will he go? That sort of thing. And also, it proves he's not gay, for those who don't think he's with Tessa. And the girlfriends gasping for him when he's away also lets us know he really delivers as a boyfriend. We can't have a reality show where he's not interacting with a girlfriend because the reality show is very explicit he's platonic with Tessa, and if we don't see him with a girl, OMG, our thoughts. They're attention whores. And with this - using Scott's fake sex life as an attraction - actual whores.

      Delete
    18. OC - I think we underestimate how important it is for Moirville to show that Scott is not gay and is a hot commodity...rolls-eyes..

    19. On Golden Skate (I know, I know...I shouldn't even bother reading the threads there) there was a brief discussion over whether or not Scott's gay because he appears to be so in love with Tessa but isn't with her. So, even with their incessant pounding away with how in love the girlfriends are with him, it's still a question for a lot of people.

      Delete
    20. I think saying "on Golden Skate" and "a lot of people" is self-cancelling. It's a couple of the usual suspects creating conversation. The figure skating chattering class on the internet is quite small. Furthermore, no other hetero skater feels the need to act out their heterosexuality in the explicit way Scott has done, aided and abetted by his family. This is about them. They're exhibitionists, and they're attention whores. The sham is a pretext for it.

    3. Hah. And why is that? Why so pinched and shifty and clenched? Why were all of Scott's answers in a strangled voice? Why didn't he and Tessa meet each other's eyes? Are they sick? They seemed pretty robust at Skate Canada. They were steadiest and most relaxed talking about skating and Sochi and their programs - the area one would think would be the biggest stressor due to pressure and desire to defend their title. They claim the reality show itself is very easy, they love the crew, and is not a distraction. Ryan Pyette is an old buddy going back years and as deferential as it gets. What was it about?

It can't be shame. Even though they've been looking media and cameras dead in the eye for years and lying without exuding the flop sweat they're showing up there.

This is part of the issue with them. If they truly felt in the right, if they truly were 100% behind their decisions, they would not be twisted up in knots up there. That is some kind of discomfort. It's not external. It's INTERNAL. They know this is fucked up, and they're doing it anyway. And that's pretty disturbing, considering they have a kid. No matter if they're going to raise the child so the child will understand that Scott and Tessa would rather avoid dealing with any fallout from their internet behavior, and obediently makes sure her parents don't have any trouble with her on the back end. They're the gold medalists, after all. Surely they wouldn't do these things KNOWING it's going to cause problems for her to some degree, and do it ANYWAY figuring they'll fix it. Who the fuck would deliberately do anything they knew would disturb their child, particularly when it's not necessary, and figure it's okay cause they'll fix it?

It's not just a particular tell. All of the behaviours put together add up conclusively. They're lying their asses off.

I guess it's some kind of consolation that they appear to be bothered by it, that there's shame involved. What a shame those feelings haven't led to having the courage to say the truth and stand up to all the people in their lives who tell them this is the way to go.

OTOH, it may not come from doing wrong - they just hate to deal with any of this crap and selling this show is dealing with it in some way. They're sitting with the disconnect in that interview and it's out of their comfort zone. I don't know if the lies themselves make them uncomfortable, just having to sit in the room with the lies, knowing people watching know they're lying. That's as close to accountability as they ever get and it's not their speed.

I also agree this is setting up to be the opposite of Ice, Sweat and Tears. We're going to see live action fake girlfriend profile pictures and albums, smooching and horseplay.

    8. "I'm not consoled that they seem to be bothered by it because it just makes it grosser. It means they're doing wrong, they know it, and have made a conscious decision to continue."

Exactly. And if that's the case, I don't know how two parents can live with themselves if they knowingly understand what they are doing is gross and has the potential to injure their daughter down the line, yet still continue on with the proactive selling of their lies. When a child is created - in this case a little being that embodies the love between its two parents and is a biological extension of them - the desire to protect that child from anyone and anything is a requisite aspect of parenthood. "The minute I saw my child for the first time I knew I would kill for him (or her) in an instant" and so on. Ask almost any parent if they've experienced those feelings and nine times out of ten (more like 100% of the time, actually) they'll say yes. Even if "life gets in the way" sometimes, there's usually a sense of guilt present. As in "my job takes me away from my family more than I wish it would." Or something to that affect.

It would seem to me that if they *do* feel guilt of some kind, they'd desperately need to find a way to rationalize to themselves that what they're doing is actually protecting their daughter. Except like all things related to V/M's stupid lies and sham relationships, that logic falls in on itself almost immediately. Because essentially, what they're protecting their daughter from is themselves. THEY choose to market themselves to the public the way they do. It doesn't matter if they have pushy families or someone is "encouraging" them to lie and sham. Ultimately, V/M are adults with free will who are in control of the decisions they make. Any attempts to defend their actions - which are PROACTIVE (I can't stress that enough. Did someone put a gun to their head and tell them to sign up for a reality show in which they push their "platonic" message to the public? I doubt it), don't hold water. I'm sure they love their child, though I don't know them so I can only assume. But the bigger issue here - the one that this blog has rightly highlighted - is the message V/M are sending. It's a message that can't be denied because V/M are shoving it in everyone's faces. And that message is: "these are our priorities, and what comes first is our MARKETING." Not their child. That's the message.

    9. >>When a child is created - in this case a little being that embodies the love between its two parents and is a biological extension of them - the desire to protect that child from anyone and anything is a requisite aspect of parenthood. <<<

Reading Pyette's write up of this interview, it's possible to infer that Tessa believes/pretends she's protecting her child by concealing her. She says "I'm a very private person" and she'd normally protect her friends and family from the cameras.

      So she's a poseur.

She's ignoring or disregarding (not to mention, CREATING) huge issues for her child in order to posture, to herself or to who knows what, as some celebrity shielding her vulnerable loved one from the public eye and from the media.

Poseur stuff there. She's acting out a fantasy of her circumstances ("very private person"). Honey, you're a very private person whether you want to be or not - there's not all that much interest in figure skaters and the fandom isn't congregated in one spot where they could all stalk you in your private time. You have your privacy UNLESS you seek the spotlight. That's the only way you won't have your privacy. Jesus with "protective."

Meanwhile, she's pretending actual circumstances and behavior and problematic issues created by her and Scott have no impact on this child. But she's hidden her child from cameras that aren't seeking her out, so there's that. Fake problem she's solved by hiding her child, real issues she's created on that pretext.

OC, can you or someone else confirm that all three Moir brothers have 1 daughter each? I have the feeling that two of the brothers each have a 1 child, while one does not have a child, but is pretending to have one.

    1. All three have children, but I've wondered as to names - i.e., if we've been misinformed about the name of one of the neices so that people would think Scott and Tessa were shouting out a niece when it was their child's name.

Danny's wife is pretty obviously pregnant at their wedding (especially in hindsight) and Charlie and Nicole's daughter resembles them, and is too young.

The gambit about pretending one of the nieces has the name that is actually their own daughter's is too much consideration than Tessa and Scott have shown to date, plus both Charlie and Danny's daughters were positioned front row so as to get their big moment on the screen at London Worlds, and, while such a ploy might be clever and considerate from one angle towards Scott and Tessa's child, it would screw over the one who was left out. But it did cross my mind.

    2. I'm pretty sure Charlotte is Charlotte and Quinn is Quinn. Somewhere out there, there's a photo of Danny, other Tessa, and Charlotte after completing some sort of baby sign language class. If you enlarge the pic, you can see the name on the certificate is Charlotte. Nicole's sister has referred to her niece Quinn too much on social media for her name not to be Quinn, IMO.

I have a guess on what VM's girl might be named, but it's nothing they've ever shouted out in the K&C.

  10. Not OC, obviously, but all three Moir boys each have a daughter. Charlie and Nicole's daughter appears constantly in their facebook pics. Danny's daughter was in a photo on his Movember page last year and her mother's pintrest page. There are pics of the other Tessa pregnant at she and Danny's wedding. There's a public photo on facebook of Charlie's wife holding their daughter right after she'd been born.

So, yes, Danny and Charlie each have their very own daughter like Scott has his own.

    4. You know, in the Pyette write-up of this interview Tessa describes herself as "very private" (except when there's a dollar in the case), and being "protective" of her family and friends so it felt odd to bring the cameras "home". I would well believe her idea of "protection" is protecting people from the eyes of strangers, but it doesn't really cover what she's done on the internet. There are ways she's completely failed to protect her child. The strategems they've used to disguise their relationship and her existence are OTT and damaging to this girl.

      Delete
    5. Tessa's idea about protection from the cameras is so self-inflated. She's not a huge star outside skating. Her child would not be beseiged by anybody OUTSIDE (fans, media) in the normal course of her career with Scott. It's so overly precious for her to squeak on about being a private person and protecting her friends and family's privacy blah blah blah because they HAVE it. So does she, Tessa. But in setting it up as oh, this is what I'm doing here, protecting my child from the media, she is exposing the child to other threats created explicitly by herself, Scott and their community, this garbage that's on the internet, the way the community has participated, the trail of slime that will be around the web for years and years, and on youtube for years (the miles of video where they talk about their lives, their homes, are in the Kiss'n'Cry, and don't admit her).

It's like Tessa sees herself as a tasteful celebrity who is in the public eye and, like all the admirable women in the public eye, is protective of those she loves, rather than exploiting them or being crass.

But she's such a poseur with that, because she's not really in the public eye except on the ice. All the other ways she and Scott are in the public eye, they've thrust themselves into it. She's making such a point of protecting her kid (and others) from a completely nonexistent problem (it's even basically nonexistent for her outside competition venues), and putting the kid in harm's way due to how she and Scott actually ARE behaving, ways she refuses to recognize or own.

This "reality show" is also going to be on youtube forever. Oh your parents were really proud of you, huh Moir? They kept YOU a secret so you would't wreck their image.

      Delete
    6. Right. V/M want to have their cake and eat it too. They are choosing to put their child in an environment of their own creation (and that they proactively seek out), and then turn around and maintain that they're protecting her from that environment.

It's like someone purposefully building a home on a faulty foundation and with bad craftmanship - they go out of their way to make sure the construction is shoddy. Then they place their loved ones in that home but complain to the city that it's not a sound structure fit for safe living and they must find a way to protect their loved ones from the danger! But they don't remove the loved ones from the home. They remain living there.

      Delete
    7. It was you or someone of like mind who commented on another thread that Tessa acts like she has no agency. For instance, Tessa chose to become a figure skater. She had more outs - not just outs, arguably more attractive alternatives than most young athletes. She could have been a professional ballerina. She chose not to. She could have spent the first months of her child's life at home with her child and Scott, training, staying fit, planning the next season, taking a short sabbatical from competition, and everyone would have written it off to shins and thought it was smart for her to do it to ensure she had plenty in the tank for the run-up to Sochi. What did she do instead? Hit the the training rink. Weeks after having that baby, she competed the short dance in Taipei and faked an attempt at the free, then she and Scott came back and did Worlds.

HER choices. And there she is in the media "I"m not just a skater." "Balance." "Safe place." Blah blah blah bullshit and more bullshit. Her mother talked almost as if someone had yanked Tessa off the barre and threw her into the rink and her mother had to create a "safe place" for her. No, that was Tessa's choice.

She is an amazing hypocrite. She makes choices, she makes decisions, and acts as if she and hers need protection from her own choices.

It's this fantasy of herself she's presenting, but it doesn't hold up. It's like these are things she believes should be true of herself (not just a skater, wants to protect those she loves), but aren't, so she pretends they are.

    3. I have a generic question - is Meryl Davis a better skater than Tanith Belbin?

    4. Barring disaster, the Shibs will make the Olympic team.

First off, of all the U.S. teams, they are by far the most technically sound (Marina has maintained they have the quietest blades of all her Canton teams) and they actually dance on ice. So, they'll earn their spot the way they should - with their skating. Secondly, the Shibs are insanely personable and growing in popularity. They're great ambassadors for the sport and they interact with fans via social media and the production of clever, fun videos. On the PR front, they do everything right. And finally, their programs this year are brilliant Olympic vehicles for them. It's almost as if they were born to skate quicksteps and foxtrots, and their SD is a wonderful display of their mastery of those rhythms. Their FD is an electrifying vehicle designed to get the audience on its feet and is going to rock the arena at US Nationals (it's also very demanding, technically). The USFSA would be idiotic not to send one of its most popular teams (with the highest level of skating ability out of all of them) to Sochi.

      Delete
    5. The USFSA has made some very idiotic decisions in naming their teams in the past, particularly with the ladies when they have an agenda. At various times, even under CoP, the USFSA has decided who they want to go to Worlds/Olympics, and then made the scoring match what they wanted.

If the USFSA feels that having the Shibs around in Sochi would be detrimental to DW in some manner, the Shibs will get lowballed at US Nationals.

      Delete
    6. How would the Shibs being in Sochi be detrimental to D/W at this point in time? It's not 2011 anymore.

Every team at U.S. Nationals will get lowballed in order to make D/W look better, that's pretty much a given. But the Shibs are a win-win for the USFSA at this point. They have the actual skating talent but they're also everything the USFSA and the USOC loves to market for the Olympic Games.

      Delete
    7. Exactly. 12:09 makes a good case for the shibs, but if the results really depended on quiet blades and mastery of the rhythms, D&W would not even be challenging for a medal and V&M would be 5 or 6 times WC.

      Delete
    8. To clarify: yes, the USFSA has an agenda. But unlike in 2011, this time the Shibs will be a part of it, not stuck on the outside looking in.

      Delete
    9. @12:28, that's right. But the argument being made is that the Shibs embody the type of team the USFSA and USOC want to send to the Olympics behind D/W. The Shibs are stellar skaters and their programs are great vehicles to showcase that skating. So, on the ice, their performances will rightfully earn a place on the team (meaning, they aren't a team that requires artificial score inflation or a bunch of cheats to succeed). Off the ice, they use media to interact with fans and sell themselves and the sport in a brilliant fashion. With the Shibs, the USFSA has its own stellar marketing team it doesn't even have to pay a salary. In sending the Shibs to Sochi, they can't lose. They can only win.

      Delete
    10. Let's not forget that the Shibs can be detrimental to CL, PB, BS and IK. Theoretically if the bronze medal is up for grabs - I think that the Italian, French and Russian federations would prefer that somehow the Shibs would not be a factor...Igor does not want to be shut out in Sochi...

      Delete
    11. If the Shibs are in Sochi, there's almost no way there will be a repeat of the 2011 Worlds podium. It won't happen unless P/B and C/L have disastrous fall-ridden performances. I/K are a giant mess right now, they'll likely be non-factors for the podium whether the Shibs are there or not. B/S may leave much to be desired this year as well. In particular, their Finnstep needs a serious amount of work.

You actually think Igor is going to work the Italian, French, and Russian federations to conspire with the USFSA to keep the Shibs off the U.S. Olympic team because they might provide some fair competition to his teams? I think you are overestimating Igor's power. Besides, it's likely C/B will make the Olympics anyway. The team I imagine will likely get shut out is H/D.

    This part left me cringing:
"In addition to training with a goal to repeat their Olympic title, Scott and Tessa have their eye on the future and what their story means to the business side of their skating relationship.

On Monday afternoon, it was a reception and a sneak peek for a reality show TV series premiering on the W Network in Canada on January 2, 2014. It follows Tessa and Scott on and off the rink. I wasn’t sure before seeing the trailer if there was going to be any new ground covered, and I have to say that if the series delivers on the promise of the trailer – it’s going to be illuminating."

    1. Surprise, surprise. The sports/entertainment industry (emphasis on the entertainment part) is full of sycophants who will facilitate the echo chamber V/M are currently living within. "Everybody does it this way," or "people on the outside can't understand what it's like on the inside," or even "well, but they're such nice kids and they have good hearts, who am I to tell them how to live their lives or run their career?" PJ, kind as she may be, is one of those sycophants.

In the post-FD press conference at Skate Canada, Scott mentioned that when it comes to their skating, he and Tessa will never compromise. They will always be the skaters they pride themselves on being - authentic, grounded in the purest level of technique, and always seeking to push the sport forward. They'll never sell out their skating or be who they are not on the ice. It's too important to them.

      Meanwhile...

    2. That write-up/interview further establishes how screwed up V/M's priorities are right now. Marketing/lies/money/opportunity comes before truth/family, since they have to protect their daughter from the opportunities they have proactively sought out which insult her existence and reek of self-absorption, entitlement, and obtuseness.

PJ Kwong should be commended. She managed to put all of that on display in one short, concise piece of pseudo-journalism and is helping V/M "dial it up." Makes it easier to detect how absolutely disgusting all of this has become. So congrats to PJ. She did her job well.

    3. On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being "I want to punch myself in the face until the blessed darkness comes" and 10 being "I'm as a high as a kite and blissfully happy," where would we say Scott was sitting on that scale when talking about how "comforting" it is to know what wherever they go in the world, they'll have their Olay products with them?

      Delete
    4. The video clip is a repeat of their morning show appearance plug-fest. PJ asks them about their favorite products and they try to hack their way through. On the upside, they did a better job of it than they did on the morning program, on the down side, it went on forever, on the kind of sympathetic side, Scott talked about Crest White Strips and said he's always had kind of yellow teeth and didn't think he could do anything but maybe at the next competition people will see that his teeth are white. That was just close enough to home to be sympathetic.

    5. 4:21, I'd compare it to the seven stages of grief, not 1-10, with Scott past the acceptance stage to something closer to corruption. The acceptance stage is something I'd describe as "I suck and I do gross things. It's not ending anytime soon so fuck everyone."

Still, plugging P&G isn't the worse thing he's done. Clearly the most awkward part for both of them is having to slide the actual brand and product names in instead of being natural and saying "The mascara" or "the lotion". They have to tout the brand and the product name, and it's tough. It's also awful because PJ had to sit there and basically run an infomercial with them.

On the up side they do a WHOLE lot worse voluntarily. This is more throwing themselves on the sword for a huge Olympic sponsor. P&G has every bit the reach and clout and brand recognition of a Kelloggs, so it's pretty major. I thought Tanith and DW were going to shit themselves when Kelloggs happened, and Kelloggs doesn't even manufacture Wheaties. P&G has the $$ and the reach to balance out the DW Kelloggs affiliation, although part of me thinks that affiliation is kind of a turn off as their twitter has become clogged with Kelloggs shout outs. I guess Scott and Tessa's interviews will likewise become logjammed with P&G product pushing.

    6. Unfortunately D&W are also in the P&G racket so it won't even anything out. They have decidedly less glamorous products, like Puffs (to wipe away the tears of those who love real ice dance?). A shitload of skaters are doing their "thank you mom" campaign.

  14. In the interest of looking at this from various perspectives, I've tried to come up with a scenario that makes their brand of lying, parading of sham girlfriends, and reactionary public-blaming acceptable that cannot be traced back to anything other than probable feelings of entitlement and selfishness on V/M's part. I'm struggling to think of one. I'm also having trouble imagining any kind of scenario in which V/M's daughter will not be directly impacted by the decision of her parents to deny her existence to the public. Not "we've decided not to publicize the fact that she exists." Because that's different from what they're actually doing, which is actual DENIAL of her existence - by doing everything in their power to bait the public into paying attention to them so they can shove in everyone's faces the image of themselves as platonic partners who live separate off-ice lives, have fake love interests, and are being generous enough to show their "true, genuine selves" in an accurate fashion.

As was mentioned in an above post, I don't know how the married parents of a child who is the physical embodiment of their love for each other and shares their DNA, would want to PROACTIVELY set up situations where they parade around as unmarried, not-romantically involved, non-parents. Why that would be considered acceptable eludes me, except to assume that V/M have managed to convince themselves that they either have no agency or that they can (and should be allowed to) have it both ways. I'm going to focus on Tessa a bit more than Scott for a moment because while their daughter has two parents who are equally responsible for her well-being, Tessa is that child's mother who carried her for nine months (give or take) in her own body. That creates a bond between a mother and a child that even an ever-present, loving father can't really know or experience. HOW then can a mother, who I'm assuming loves and adores her child, SEEK OUT or take advantage of opportunities in which to deny her child's existence? I truly wonder how she can reconcile the two things on a personal level. It must take an insane amount of rationalizing and beating to a bloody pulp any other rational or ethical perspectives with a tire iron. While there are a lot of situations that result in decisions that straddle the line between acceptable/unacceptable, that doesn't mean that moral absolutes no longer exist in the world, because they do. "I will walk to the ends of the earth for you. I will never let anyone hurt you, or knowingly or willingly put you in a situation to be hurt, because when you hurt, I hurt." Right? Isn't that the biological reality of parenthood?

Anyone familiar with the history of the Beatles probably knows the story of John Lennon's first marriage. He got married just as the group was starting to take off in popularity and his manager basically told him that he needed to keep his marriage (and the child that was born the following year) a secret from the public because it would hinder the image of the band the manager was trying to sell - four carefree bachelors seeking to change the face of rock and roll. Teenage women were among the band's target demographic, so that was the reasoning. Lennon felt as though going along with his manager's request wasn't a choice. It was more of an ultimatum of sorts. "This is how I'm choosing to market you and you'll abide by this if you care about the band's success." At that point, Lennon wasn't in the drivers seat. He was a passenger along for the ride. Later, when he and the rest of the band fought for and gained control over their image and marketing, he told everyone who didn't like his choices - and that included his new romance/later marriage with Yoko Ono - to take a flying leap. When his second son was born, he demanded that he be given time off to stay at home and raise him, which is what he did.

    1. Unless they have a gun to their heads being held by people who are demanding they play the part of platonic partners (a part they play TERRIBLY), non-parents, and that they parade those fake versions of themselves in interviews, books, and now on national television, V/M have agency. They hold the trump card. It is THEIR life and THEIR career and THEIR ultimate decision over how it will move forward. They make no bones about how important that is to them in their skating. They've talked about how they will never sell out or compromise, especially if it means they have to go out on the ice and be who they are not. Yet when it comes to how they market themselves, they've sold out almost every step of the way. For what? And what will it gain them in the long run? Who will pay the price for that decision to sell out? Because someone always pays a price for that in the end. There's really no good way to spin it.

It's not "oh, all of this talk about how this will injure their daughter, or how this is really gross, is overrated, drama queen histrionics." To believe that is, as OC noted, not only the result of a complete lack of perspective from being too far inside the business/family/inner circle, but also unfair to V/M's daughter. She's being placed in a position where she'll either have to find a way to rationalize away any future hurt or shame she feels, or her parents/relatives will have to make concerted efforts to raise her within a modified framework in which their actions are twisted so as to be considered acceptable. And that is NOT FAIR to her, just as it's not fair to children when their parents purposefully raise them in environments meant to instill feelings of hatred or prejudice towards certain individuals or groups of people. What V/M are doing IS a big deal. It is NOT drama queen histrionics when one points it out. If it WAS NOT a big deal to V/M, I don't believe they would go to such lengths to lie and act so patronizing toward the public.

I'm a parent. And no, that is not the reality of parenthood. If shit like that were true, there would never be any parental child abuse. Yet there is. Tons of it.

Here's the reality: Being able to biologically give birth to a child does not mean that you automatically love that child. There are rape victims that don't love the children that are born from the rape. There are perfectly happy people that are not cut out to be parents. There are people who realize after their child is born that they should never have had a child. There are parents who hate their children.

I'm disgusted by all the assumptions and stereotypes on this board. It's like some kind of stupid Victorian fantasy.

      Delete
    4. The point is many of us believe what Tessa and Scott are doing is bad parenting. Sure, there are many bad parents in the world. Is that an excuse?

      Delete
    5. I think there's a difference between a biological reality of parenthood in a general sense, and outliers who don't conform to those standards, yes? Of course there are parents who, on account of abuse, neglect, self-inflicted issues including alcoholism or drug use (and by self-inflicted I mean who initiate that usage themselves of their own volition), or psychological/mood disorders may be incapable or struggle to ever bond or love a child. But their existence does not "normalize" their experiences to the point where they are considered the average experience, correct?

I also have to laugh at the idea of a parent automatically loving their child upon first laying eyes on him/her to be nothing more than Victorian fantasy, considering that the Victorian Era was somewhat defined by a fascination with the macabre.

      Delete
    6. @6:10 that's a very generalized statement. Not every parent feels that way about their children. And I wouldn't even go as far as the above post to assume that's due to some self-inflicted issue or psychological problem. Some parent just never feel that bond with their kid.

      Delete
    7. @11:06, that's the point of the statement being generalized, though. It's a generalization because it's based on the average experience of most human parents and those in the general animal world - meaning, that they love, want to protect their children from harm, or both.

      Delete
    8. Yes. I guess my point is even though that might be the general reaction of most parents, we can't know whether Tessa and Scott fall into that category.

      Delete
    9. I don't have a Victorian view of parenthood - you don't need a license to have a child and many parents don't have that life or death bond. And it's not polarized either - I'd kill for my child/I abuse my child. We all know there's tons of territory in between, from parents who can't separate their own interests from their child's interests to parents who are ambivalent about the whole deal. AND we know there are parents who favor one child over another. There really aren't archtypes.

But this is a side argument. So if Scott and Tessa aren't that angelic parental ideal, then what we're seeing are two people who put their child's interests behind their own, while, one presumes, convincing themselves they're doing it for her, and rationalizing away the blowback their decisions will create for their kid when she's older and looks back at this time.

When Tessa talks it's like she romanticizes her circumstances. She and Scott are these big celebrities, she's protective of her private life, she extends that to being protective of her family and friends. She is doing the best thing for her child by shielding her from Tessa's celebrity - you know the big bad where a celebrity's kid is out there in a situatoin they didn't ask for.

But that's crap. Tessa's not a celebrity. In the world where they ARE celebrities - competitive figure skating and in their home communities, the great majority of people know about the little girl and she's not protected from their interest in her.

IOW the little girl isn't threatened by CAMERAS, she's not threatened by the media, anymore than Tessa is threatened by cameras or media outside skating venues and competitions. Not because Tessa protects her, but because this isn't an issue. There's no true entertainment media interest in Scott and Tessa outside what they themselves seek out and set up. If they didn't want it they'd be pretty much left to their own devices.

So it's this sanctimonious thing Tessa does where she's protecting/shielding her daughter from a fantasy problem, a problem she made up.

    10. As said above, she and Scott SEEK OUT opportunities to deny her existence. They are in the middle of an Olympic career that is a source of enormous pride and excitement for their families and friends. They are going out of their way to create additional chronicles of this period, apart from the competition coverage and competition interviews, and this reality show appears to have been created explicitly for the fame whores in their community and among their family to go to town and knock themselves out and show off for each other and be bonded as a community by their obsession with Scott and Tessa's fame.

And I suspect that whatever renumeration Scott and Tessa got from this gig went straight to the ISC bursary fund.

From the outside is looks like the main reason Scott and Tessa compete and win is to put the ISC on the map, or at least that's the opinion of the ISC as run by the Moirs. And they're not doing this shit for their child; there is so much obvious agenda piled on top of the sham at this point you could drown in it, and much of it seems ad hoc. It's completely corrupted. They keep her out of it because they created a huge mess - THEY did. When the mess is history, the official record of Scott and Tessa's career shows her as a non-person - this career that is of utmost importance to them and their families. They went out of their way to make her a non-person while going out of their way to amplify their own public footprint.

    11. So to sum up, neither the blog, nor many participants in these comments, are arguing Scott and Tessa should put their child on display. The blog, and many participants, also understand if Scott and Tessa just kept a low profile and didn't acknowledge their status or their daughter's birth until after their eligible career. That would be perfectly consistent with Tessa's posture that she's a very private person who is "protective" of those she loves.

But this? Cut the crap. They are going out of their way to put themselves on display. This reality show could have been mostly skating and skating-related. Instead it's a freaking melodrama real life soap opera they've cooked up that is largely about their fake home life, complete with acting out fake personas as platonic partners - and talking about those fake personas as if they're real, they fake their home, and of course, they have fake love interests also parading around.

I'm sorry, the gun to their head was where? And what does this do but insult their daughter. The child looks back and sees the priorities. Hmm, show some sensitivity and consideration - i.e., we're keeping her existence "hidden", and because of that, we have to sacrifice some opportunity and publicity and so do our friends and family. It wouldn't be fair to keep her hidden and then go out creating material that will live forever proactively excluding her and therefore, disrespecting her.

Oh no. Keep her hidden AND carry on flagrantly flaunting in public as much as they can, getting as much notoriety as they can, raking it in where they can, while bragging on how genuine they're being, and womp up a few tears while you're at it. Then tell the press how discreet and private and protective you are. Who is going to protect this girl from the internet? It's completely delusional and self-indulgent to imagine they'll raise this girl in a protective bubble where the freaking INTERNET is "out there" and the "media" is "out there" and she's in her safe place. There is no freaking safe place from the internet. Her friends will know. Her friends' parents will know. Her schoolmates and teachers will know and her love interests will know and her own children will know, and as none of them were raised up Scott and Tessa's asses, these people will know that Scott and Tessa prioritized their marketing over their child, and proactively went out of their way to hurt her feelings, because that's what they're doing in kiss'n'cries, in articles talking about Scott's love for his neice, in reality shows where Scott and Tessa talk about what family means to them and here's our family. Nobody will give a shit about "Tessa and Scott" in a few years as a reality show. It will only matter to the family, and it is going to exist as their record of rubbing their kid's face in their selfishness.

    12. When I look at Tessa's sincere act, and also consider how beautiful she is, and how much she manipulates, it's kind of scary to think of her using her attributes to influence/manipulate her child into accepting/being okay with all of this.

  15. Will someone confirm that Tessa and Scott are actually parenting the child?

If they realized early on that they weren't cut out to be parents, and gave the child to someone else (grandparent, cousin, whatever) to raise, that is an example of a good parenting decision, rather than a bad one. Sure, it hurts every kid to know their parents didn't love them, but it's far more important that the child be loved by somebody than to simply be with its parents.

  16. If VM have lied to their production company and are indeed dedicated to playing the part of non-married, single and lovin' it twenty-somethings both on and off camera, then I doubt they're involved much (if at all) in the parenting of their child. All traces of this child would have to be erased from their lives. I hope whoever is raising her loves her and does their best to keep her life normal.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Why? V/M ultimately get to decide where everything is filmed. The crew doesn't have unfettered access to their lives, only to what they agree to show. They don't have to erase all traces of the child "from their lives," only from the 1% of their life they show on camera - what happens at the rink and in the pre-planned, largely scripted "outings" with friends/family, most of which can take place outside V/M's actual home.

To assume V/M are hardly involved with parenting their child based on what will be shown in their reality show is to buy into the same kind of "reality" as they try to sell with the sham photos of Scott with his "girlfriends." That's not reality. It's faked. Why do you also assume V/M are playing the role of non-married, single, and lovin' it twenty-somethings off camera? You don't see them off camera. Neither does the media. Off camera is when they are their true selves because they aren't putting themselves on display.

    2. That's not the only reason that I assume VM aren't very involved as parents. I have a really hard time buying that they have a happy home life together with a child. This series must have been a relief for them. Finally, an excuse to shift the child off to a relative!

    3. Well, we only know from how they describe their days - so scheduled, they claim, it's early to bed, early to rise, dinner out maybe, and then repeat. Tessa does school and Scott does his Ilderton deal. That's how they play it - so we know there's no room for a child in there. IS there room? We don't know. We do know that kid was barely able to lift her own head when Scott and Tessa were back on the ice gunning for the 4CCs and Worlds. Pop out the kid and back at it, swat away the chance to sit the season out and regroup. I'm harping on this, but that year alone stamps bullshit on Tessa's balance mantra.

      Delete
    4. Just look at the previews and we can see exactly how unfiltered this is. In each preview shot, Tessa is styled for television. In one of her P&G plugs she said she doesn't wear make-up at the rink while training - there's even images of her and Scott practicing for CSOI in 2010 where she's make-up free. We've even seen images of her at airports basically make-up free. In her "tearful" clip she's got on make-up designed for high definition cameras. In the "two "kids" at a carnival" scenes she's done up like a tampon commercial. In the pool her make-up is done, her hair is done, her earings are in - that coordinate with her swimsuit - and her swimsuit is studded with crystals.

It's also odd to me that the interior set-ups we've seen (such as in the Hilborns) don't look like reality TV as I've seen it, which isn't much, but includes Dog Whisperer (where it's hand held cameras, not bounce boards, mikes, key lights, cables strewn all over) and DWTs (DWTS rehearsal packages are shot with a hand-held camera). So for the Hilborn house segment, the crew actually came in and set up. What kind of reality show is that?

    5. "So for the Hilborn house segment, the crew actually came in and set up. What kind of reality show is that?"

The kind where they make up a story beforehand and then it's acted out? As in, *documentary.* loooool

I was looking again at this interview. It's creepy how Tessa is so smiley, cheerfully determined in her message about this experience being so positive, so genuine....but she never either looks sincere nor sounds real. It's very eerie wind-up doll.

It gives me chills how manipulative this is. You said elsewhere in these comments that you think they purposely plan stuff like this so they can use it as excuses later on as to why they cannot reveal the truth. The more I see this interview, and their demeanor throughout, the more I feel it's not so much a way to have an excuse for not revealing, although that is of course a byproduct.

I think it's more that for years now Tessa has decided she WILL NOT allow the public to know the truth about her status with Scott and her tunnel-vision zeal to accomplish this has turned her into this ruthlessly cynical person, with no moral qualms about pushing her husband to whore himself out with fake girlfriends or denying her own child. I don't think she's giving any thought to repercussions or considering any big picture. It's about maintaining what she believes is a secret (from the public at large) and she'll go to any lengths to stay hidden. ANY lengths.

It's not normal for a woman to *want* her husband to pose as someone else's lover. Nor is it normal for a woman to *want* to appear as if she's not a mother when she has a young child. A baby turns your heart inside-out and rearranges all of life's priorities (talking about normal people here, not those other "bad parents" mentioned in other comments). For Tessa to accept (more than that, to want it and plan it) Scott's boorish behavior with the fake girlfriends and to pretend she doesn't have a child is to mess with the very core of her being. It's scary. She must be surrounded by people who are equally sick, there's no other way to account for the families' acceptance of all of this.

Her parents are with her all the time they are at home of course like any child of parents who both work. What we see is only 1% of their life and it is also false. Is normal for me don't bring the children in the competition or in interviews. they want to protect her from all of this for the moment, this is the love of parents, you would have photos of your child on internet for use and costume of all???? that is used by journalists as a result of any error in their competition? her moment of fame will come in a few years

    1. Nobody wants Scott and Tessa to put their kid in the spotlight. People are suggesting Scott and Tessa might want to dial back their own grasping for the spotlight, as every grasp means they have to deny their child again. And as most of their grabbing and showboating appears to play off how they market their relationship and also give their family and friends some fame by association.

This career is obviously everything to Scott and Tessa no matter how they try to spin, and it's beyond obvious that it's the entire universe for their family and their community. It's historical. They are looking for opportunities to put as many people as possible on the historical record so when they look back at media, there they are. Tessa has said this EXPLICITLY. She has said the bridal shoot photos were a record she and Scott and their families wanted of the fun times when their lives included photo shoots. They acknowledge people in the Kiss'n'Cry at competitions because those are on youtube forever and people can watch and hear their names. Their in-laws hold their little girls front and center at Worlds so the camera will see them and in years to come they can see themselves as a little girl and part of it.

Scott and Tessa can't get enough of it and can't do enough of it and every word out of their mouths tells us they do not have a daughter, there is no such person, and somehow this is healthier and more protective of her than keeping their mouths shut, lying low and acting respectable and with respect. No, it's somehow protective to make a POINT of leaving her out.

What if they're superior beings who don't mind stooping for marketing and business reasons but are far too precious, special and unique to share their actual status with the public? And of course, they consider their child too precious to share the fact of her existence with the public?

I think their rationale is in that neighborhood.

The problem is this part: "marketing and business reasons."

They want to have it both ways. As soon as they want to "protect their child" by keeping her existence hidden from the public, but also want to squeeze dry every inch of spotlight coming their way, they have incompatible agendas. As soon as they see their chemistry and relationship as a commodity they use to tease and bait the public for marketing reasons, as soon as they become willing to add other people's agendas onto their self-promotion - the promotion of Ilderton, the ISC, letting the community have a share, letting neices and other relatives have a share, and also indulge their own drama queen streak and exhibitionism, they've screwed the pooch. They're corrupt.

If they do the circus they're not protecting the child by concealing her, they've set her up to be hurt by concealing her.

If they dial it down they lose out on some of the spoils of success, not just the stuff that comes their way but the stuff they go out and get. We know what they chose. They chose self-interest and compromised themselves on their child.

They want to capitalize on the perks and the opportunities, and spread the wealth to their nearest and dearest. And they want to pretend to protect their precious reality from having the public know anything about it, even though compared to Moirville and inside skating, the public is the least intrusive factor in their situation.

If you want to protect your child you do what others have pointed out, you dial it down. There are still interviews, sponsors, competitions, meets and greets. There's not bridal photo shoots, groping the fake girlfriend on social media, a reality show, numerous interviews talking about how we're about to see the real you, real day to day lives, real home life. There's no interviews where you both extol your families or articles mentioning your brothers' kids that are explicitly framed to exclude your child.

They don't want to actually pay the price of their own decisions. The price of their decision to have this child and keep her existence on the down low would be discretion and some type of respect. Too high a price to pay when they want to flaunt themselves.

Two nice kids who were fortunate to be blessed with enormous talent, the best partner for their talents, the best coaching money could buy. They also have the blessing of strong family support.

How the hell did they end up where they are now? They're still young enough to reverse course if they wanted. I wonder sometimes if they want to get out of this mess and just don't know how. However, looking back several years it's clear they've descended to increasingly lower behaviours. In a word-- now they're corrupt.

That they purposefully dig themselves deeper - such as this reality show - so they can once again have a situation where a reveal seems like a bad idea. They don't want to tell the truth. They've gone to extremes. Withholding the truth is power to them, on a bunch of levels. It keeps them the superior creatures they obviously believe themselves to be, and it's also their biggest bait, the will they or won't they - or so they think.

The fans think the skating is the biggest bait but that doesn't interest Moirville.

Anyhow, by doing up the reality show THIS big, including the Hilborns, Scott once again referencing a hypothetical boyfriend, and airing it through Canadians, with Sochi just weeks later, how can they possibly "reveal" after Sochi? Oh dear, they cannot, without making their nearest and dearest and the production team they love so much also look bad. Too bad, guess they'll have to continue being secret.

They're hustling themselves with this. They don't want to come clean, so they create situations where they lie so big and so recently it makes it problematic to come clean. If they'd dialed it down through this quad, then they could easily reveal after Sochi. They're purposefully making sure they CAN'T reveal after Sochi, or so they pretend. I wonder what other people think, people who believed they'd have revealed years before now, when they learn that, nope, oops, yet again not going to happen - because of stuff they DELIBERATELY chose in order to create a rationale for continuing the lie.

    9. 10:37 - Scott would never have agreed to hide a child if not for Tessa? If he doesn't like it maybe he should deal like a grown up with his smothering, avaricious, grasping, power-tripping, fame-whore, star-struck, control-freak family and community. Either he lacks the balls or he's so insecure, he can't relinquish the ego perks he gets from having started as the family's youngest child/clown turned family star.

If he created authentic boundaries the situation might be different. He's 26 and this method he's chosen is pathetic. It's long past its sell-by date.

All of this stuff - the sham, the reality show - occupies the family/community and diverts them from being up close and personal in a more immediate way, and demand more time and attention.

As Scott himself has said plenty of times, it starts with Ilderton and Scott's loyalty to Ilderton.

    10. "by doing up the reality show THIS big, including the Hilborns, Scott once again referencing a hypothetical boyfriend, and airing it through Canadians, with Sochi just weeks later, how can they possibly "reveal" after Sochi?"

Who knows if the Hilborns are included as a family in this fake-drama-reality-series. It does look like at least Cassandra gets her own special moment in the sun. That picture that was posted a few weeks ago of her living room shows all cameras aimed at the sofa. Gee, I wonder what Scott is filming on Cassandra's sofa?

Of course, it was ESSENTIAL to do this and get the message out in time for Canadians and the Olympics. Now the whole world will have proof Scott isn't gay and moreover he has a sexy GF willing to prove it on national TV. If the sidebar message is that Tessa just isn't attractive/sexy/desirable enough for Scott, oh well. (And btw, Scott's girlfriends have never been able to compete against Tessa's accomplishments and beauty. No matter how active Scott gets with his fake GF, it isn't believable when his bff and partner is Tessa Virtue.)

Of course it will be more than ever difficult to reveal the truth after this fiasco of shows. I think they're stuck in the pit they've dug until someone on the outside of Moirville blows up all the lies. VM and Co. are hallucinating if they think they won't be exposed. History says otherwise.

All the sycophants who thought Scott acting out with a fake GF was just hilarious will also be part of the exploding bomb of a reveal. I hope they're all ready for the day they're publicly exposed as the stupidest idiots in the world.

    11. The point is, they WANT to be "stuck" in this pit they've dug. They're digging in on purpose, so they will have an excuse to say oh it's too complicated to clear up. We need to let even MORE time pass. Then repeat. This is intentional. This is more than the simple save face. They are deliberately amping up so they can turn around and have to protect themselves and their child from the mess they created for this exact purpose. That's what's been pointed out in this comments section and it looks spot on. They are purposefully creating a mess they have to protect her from.

    12. Also, you have to wonder if they think their kid is a commodity. As someone said, she's the physical manifestation of their love for each other. Considering how they commodify their own relationship, maybe that's warped how they see her. OMG, we whore ourselves out, if we admit her it's whoring her out! She's the physical manifestation of our love! What's that worth on the stock exchange - there's no ceiling! Better lock it down.

This is all stuff they've created.

    13. "OMG, we whore ourselves out, if we admit her it's whoring her out!

It would be so ironic if they really feel that way, considering the agreement among all of Moirville, including his darling Tessa, that it's A-OK for Scott to act-out a sexual involvement with a girl who is not his wife. Talk about whoring themselves out. It's vile.

  18. Scott and Tessa seem to believe they're the more private figure skaters. Scott seems to believe he's got this image, as he likes to point out he and Tessa are the only ones not on social media (disingenuous - they don't have accounts under their own names but they're on social media more than most of the other skaters, and are more manipulative on it).

What current Olympic skaters are bigger attention whores than Scott and Tessa?

Meryl and Charlie? Meryl and Charlie are marketing themselves as Davis/White - gold medalists in waiting (or de facto gold medalists just waiting for the medal ceremony). They are on social media as ice dancers/figure skaters. Every single thing they put out is calculated to position themselves as the best, most deserving ice dancers out there. The most personal thing I've learned about Meryl Davis in the past quad is she has a depth perception issue. That's it. Otherwise everything she and Charlie do is in the context of "Davis White - champion ice dancers."

The Shibs are on social media constantly but they're not on social media talking about the Shibs.

Weaver & Poje pretty much talk about their skating and skating related stuff. There was that article about the breakfast tacos and the tree planting, but that was a year ago. Since then it's programs and ankle rehab and goals.

Who are bigger attention whores than Virtue and Moir? Who consistently tries to divert attention paid to their skating onto attention paid to their personal lives? Consistently. Always. Every time. Who goes out and rattles the cage if the fandom appears preoccupied with other things? Who prostitutes their relationship and chemistry CONSTANTLY?

It's them. But I fully believe THEY believe they think they're more private then the others. I fully believe they're that delusional.

    1. OC - basically you summed it beautifully - who consistently tries to divert attention paid to their skating onto attention paid to their personal lives - it's them and Moirville. I think one of the nicest interviews we got ever about VM was that impromptu interview with Jennifer Swan and PJ Kwong. It was about the skating, the process. Whenever Jennifer Swan either tweeted or spoke to the media - it was respectful. I am not sure who in the VM camp keeps insisting on showering us with the personal and using it as a marketing tool but gosh they just don't get it. Fans have seen this pattern once too often and have pushed the mute button. There have been multiple opportunities for them to just focus on the skating and have the media send out that message instead of the bullshit - for instance during the bridal shoot - Monika Platek of CBC tweeting - oohh - a bridal shoot - but its not what you think...what idiotic sports reporter does that? What idiotic sports reporter mentions the London Knights in every VM article last year? This year it appears that Tessa is once again mentioning the word balance ad nauseaum - perhaps to replace the word journey...and seriously stop saying that you are more than a figure skater...we get that all athletes are more than their sport - but doesn't she realize that repeating that time and time again - she sounds like a snob and inadvertedly perhaps you are putting down Scott...isn't it enough to say perhaps - that I love skating and dancing and with it - I've been given great opportunities to travel the world and learn about different cultures, worked with great choreographers etc and it has given me a strong sense of who I am - rather than I am more than just a figure skater...it's like saying - oh I am more than just an actor - well duh..

    2. Anon here at 11:33 am - hmm perhaps I am too harsh on Tessa and the balance/more than a figure skater comment. I keep forgetting that she is 24 years old and well still trying to figure out who she is...

      Delete
    3. I completely agree that Tessa has overdone it with the "balance". If we use the logic she uses on other topics, she's really saying she's obsessed with her career and tries to go through the motions of interest in other stuff, but fails. When she says "we're sincere, genuine, open, accurate" she means she's lying her ass off. So why not apply that algorithm to everything out of her mouth. Of course she's going to yak about balance since she's parading around on a reality show that's leveraged off her supposed fame as an ice dancer. This is also when she lets us know how private and protective she is, while setting off time bombs for her child, as was astutely expressed by someone else in the comments. She's always serving up the obvious on a platter as if it's gold plated and scented with lilacs.

      Delete
    4. If Tessa were a 24 year old trying to figure it out, it would be an improvement. Instead she and Scott have behaved like twenty somethings who know it all, making huge, reckless, irrevocable decisions that are going to impact the innocent person they chose to bring into the middle of this (they could have waited to start their family). Hubris is used a lot on this blog to describe how Virtue and Moir play fast and loose and I think it's on point.

      Delete
  19. Here's what I think influences fans when they look at Scott/Tessa/TM.

They're young. They are young parents in the middle of a demanding, stressful, extremely high profile career that is the center of the universe for most of the people in their enormous circle of family and friends, and they chose to become parents at this time instead of waiting til things have calmed down. Despite living an existence where there are major demands on their time and attention and major demands that they share the spotlight with those eager to associate themselves with Scott and Tessa's fame.

Fans who knew Scott and Tessa were expecting quite wrongly thought this decision said something about their priorities. That in the middle of all of this they wanted a baby. It was the baby that was important. Apart from skating, their lives would be organized around her. Otherwise why the hell do it now? Why add that to the mix?

It must be so important to them to do it right smack dab in the middle.

But what it looks like now is she was a trophy, an Olympic bookend, and after that, just carry on with the marketing in the same way, no adjustment for her arrival.

They chose to have her under extraordinary circumstances. Where's the fire? They could have been first time parents at 25 and 27 instead. They brought her into this, and when they made that decision, I don't think fans can be blamed for inferring this would influence how Scott and Tessa behaved, and for the better, otherwise why do it?

But it didn't. They got worse. So it looks, frankly, horrible. Horrible. Reckless careless stupid and spoiled.

    1. Or perhaps it was an accident, she didn't want to terminate the pregnancy, and the denial of her child's existence is her disassociating from an unwanted experience. It makes sense why she would pretty much keep right on training, go back into training immediately in a season she could've skipped, and try to finish the season without missing a beat. She has said winning silver in 2011 was crushing and made her feel like she didn't deserve the Olympic gold anymore... a pretty extreme reaction for someone who did amazingly well for just having a baby. I always thought that was some misplaced shame about getting pregnant.

@ 6:43, you actually believe half the things that come out of Tessa's mouth in interviews?

      Delete
    3. This is 6:43. Sometimes I think she tells more truth than she realizes. If you read her quotes from their book it's basically the story of two kids falling in love (with "but we're not dating" added at the the end). And all of her latest interviews she said a lot of "we" go to bed at this time and "we" eat dinner and "we" this "we" that. She was speaking as a married woman about her husband without realizing it. I do think there are grains of truth to much of what she says. I'm more suspicious when she's directly addressing issues of relationships and privacy, which she wasn't in her discussion of 2011 Worlds so I see no reason she'd lie about it.

      Delete
    4. And you'd also think if they're going to raise her to believe they were protecting her by leaving her out of the exhibitionistic displays they engage in during each competitive year, that Tessa might have the discipline, and Scott might have the discipline, to refrain from publicly celebrating these opportunities, from talking about what a treat it is, what a thrill, and very exciting and special for family and friends. Because this stuff sticks around. Her parents will tell her one thing and when she watches the archives she'll hear them saying something different. So her parents are lying to somebody - it's her or it's us. And I think either way is a pretty hideous legacy to leave your child, especially as Scott and Tessa play it, prostituting their emotions and their personalities to make the sale, and all for such cheap, short-term, low rent garbage.

I heard someone once describe this as something Tessa and Scott use as a shield of protection around their true selves, their true lives off-ice. How sad that they think their lies and social media antics are a protection when in reality it's a trainwreck that will inevitably blow up in their faces.

And the real head-scratcher is always - protection from what? Marriage and a child? Real, romantic love? Their greatest lie is that the truth needed to be protected and/or hidden.

      Delete
    6. I think when Tessa speaks "grains of truth" it's intentional. This "We" stuff is exactly what she did with her account of dinner with the queen. They're mind fuckers.

They don't let shit out by accident. Tessa is a self-programmed robot. Scott - if you go to the last link in the post above and follow it to the website about lying, he hits most of the markers, from disassociating himself from personal pronouns to his tenses and clauses colliding, to swallowing his voice. His face is either a festival of tics, or a sullen, what the fuck is it to you mask. But he doesn't slip shit out. His body language does; he doesn't.

As to Tessa apparently saying that losing Worlds 2011 made her feel like she didn't deserve her Olympic medal, this is Miss "Balance is Important" right?

Healthy child weeks before? Everybody out of it healthy enough so mama can get back to training? Three whole years til Sochi? Big deal. She lost Worlds! Take my Olympic gold from me!

They're full of shit, coming and going. She's Miss Balance when it suits and she's Miss Locker Room meltdown when that's what she wants to sell. I don't think she melts down. I think they're full of shit. I think they're pandering to what they think is relatable. "We're vulnerable! We melt down!"

(I agree that her branding herself as "balanced" inadvertently insults Scott. It implies he's one dimensional. HE never talks about balance. He never talks about school. It's basically saying "Unlike my one note partner, I have a life.")

With Worlds, that was Tessa and Scott being grandiose. They'd just won the Olympics and Worlds the previous season They'd pulled off getting married and the public didn't know. From Skate Canada through Vancouver they were a married couple - newlyweds - skating Mahler and pretending to be platonic bff. They got pregnant perfectly on schedule. Clearly, nothing was beyond them. They were superhuman, obviously.

They could re-enter international competition triumphantly at Worlds and retain their title against competition that had trained all year to be the first US World champions in ice dance. Tessa was strong - her skating was more powerful than in Vancouver, she'd acquired more muscle.

It didn't pan out. I think some of it was the political climate - DW were competing all year, VM kept teasing coming back and didn't, while DW danced every dance (well not DANCED, but showed up).

And all the hype they pumped out prior to it all. They're reactionary - that was perfectly said, and 2011 is Exhibit A.

At Worlds, they ran out of gas (for them), which gave the judges opportunity to toss the title to the US, and the judges took it.

It was their pride that was hurt. They thought they were untouchable. Look at the Moirs taking themselves to Russia expecting VM to pull it off. That whole year wasn't just about Worlds. It was about no limit for Scott and Tessa, they can do anything, beat anyone, under any circumstances.

Their commentary basically boiled down to V/M's SD "not grabbing them" because Scott's costume wasn't "dressy enough" and that he should be be wearing a jacket. No mention of technique, speed, difficulty, nothing...apparently, skating is merely a fashion show.

    2. I think they one of them didn't "get" Faruccus either, as performed at the Olympics. They thought Scott was OTT. Here they are, two skaters (presumably) who critique figure skating largely from a performance standpoint, who don't notice what skating is or isn't going on. I've noticed this constantly with their comments about MTM - what impresses them is her smile and his strength.

A lot of skaters who comment are like this. I don't know how they were trained themselves, but they're the ones who spread crap information. With the exception, possibly, of Johnny Weir, whom I haven't been able to listen to yet, but have read he's excellent and a cut above the rest.

    3. I watched NBC's coverage of Skate Canada, and was very impressed with Johnny Weir's commentary - very technical without going over viewer's heads. He still needs to rein in the comments a bit, I believe he referred to Jeremy Abbott as having "mental instability" when it comes to competition (I think what he was trying to say is that he mentally melts down in competition, but it came out wrong). He went to great lengths to explain why Patrick Chan's skating in between his superior elements is head and shoulders above his competitors.

    4. I would rather take Johnny Weir and a Ben Agosto any day of the week than Scott Hamilton and Sandra Bezic. And OC - I have to agree that the majority of these commentators who have had these gigs for a while now - are just phoning it in and really have no incentive to break down the technical aspects of the sport - it's so disheartening to both the viewer and the athlete. At least here in Canada, the french CBC will probably have Marie-France Dubreuil and possibly Patrice Lauzon working the dance event at the Olympics which will be a nice option...

      Delete
    5. Some years back, maybe at the Olympics, Scott Hamilton and Tom Hammond were talking to Johnny Weir, who sat between then. It was at time when I felt Weir was on to be the dog and pony show, only he never acted that way. He always came off sensible, smart, articulate, and so Hamilton and Hammond had to treat him with respect, and then once he wasn't in the booth with them anymore, or he was the subject of conversation, he was treated as this "character." I think he stands out not because he never cared about coming off stereotypically "masculine" but just because he never came off stupid, programmed and insecure. He always had a lot of natural confidence and feeling of being at ease in his skin when in front of the camera or microphone, and when you see him you realize how unusual that is in skating, where people work up a persona and wear it like armor - more than you see ordinarily, even.

      Delete
    6. 11:45, some of these people aren't just phoning it in, they are invested in pandering and patronizing, and they really don't want an informed public because then they can't promote their own biases.

Johnny did a great job. I agree he could have toned it down in a few places, but he was fantastic when it came to explaining what was happening technically. My favorite was when he started talking about knee action--up-and-down vs. side-to-side--and how that translates into power when stroking.

      Delete
    8. I agree, Johnny was a wonderful commentator. My only complaint is talking too much during the performances but that is a general complaint of mine with most commentators. I know there's not a lot of time in-between to get in all that is needed to say, but I wish all commentators would dial it down during the skating and wait until after the music stops to go into any depth.

However, Johnnie was knowledgeable, respectful, and he explained things in terms the audience could understand but without any patronizing. I was very impressed. I hope we get to hear him a lot.

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the video - anon at 1:55 am. It's interesting to see the different approaches to the SD. I am hoping that VM don't tweak their programs too much prior to TEB because I believe they are the right vehicles for them and it's a matter of confidence and execution. The last team that we haven't seen is IK. Next week should be an interesting dance event at NHK.

      Delete
    3. A difference between the teams not discussed as much is related to their actual edge-depth and how that is achieved.

V/M's knee compression is textbook and makes for wonderfully fluid skating, allowing them to work their edges deep into the ice, draw power from their blades, and maintain steady and free upper bodies. D/W tend to rely more on body lean to work their edges into the ice, which usually aren't as deep as V/M's and limit the expanse of what they can achieve with their upper bodies. It's no wonder D/W always look so tired after their programs are finished. Because they don't utilize proper skating mechanics in the way V/M do, they force themselves to work much harder to achieve the same ends (varying speed and momentum, deep edges, acrobatic lifts with multiple position changes, etc).

      Delete
    4. You know, a couple of years ago, when DW were doing steps, Tanith said something about here is where they try to get the levels, no matter how tired, here is where they dig in. It raised a flag that I didn't follow up at the time. Why the fuck should the judges, or the sport, give a damn if a team or a skater is pushing their edges in ? Like it's labor. Oh Jesus, here we are, it's steps, lean, lean, lean, PUSH PUSH.

They're supposed to be skating. Yes, legs get tired. Yes, there's a reason step sequences aren't part of show programs. But still, in step sequences you're skating. You don't stop skating to shove your edges in at a deep lean. The lean is supposed to facilitate your skating.

DW are all "show". IOW, they "Show" a deep edge without actually SKATING with the deep edge. No matter how deep their edges get, their blade run doesn't get any longer, so what's the point? An edge isn't a stand-alone feature, it's part and parcel with blade run. If you've got a deep edge without long blade run, then the edge doesn't have much value - it's like a pose, and that's how DW show their edges - without actually using them. No wonder they're exhausted at the end of their programs.

    8. Skating mechanics in ice dance has been undermarked by judges in this quad - it's criminal. Just because the end product looks effortless - doesn't mean its easy - it's actually the opposite. To make it look easy and effortless - that's when you achieve perfection in mechanics - and is highlighted when it is shown in slow motion - the perfect runner, the perfect dive, gymnastics, the baseball pitcher who just doesn't throw a fastball etc...What I appreciate with VM is obviously the skating mechanics - but then add that they really don't do filler movement...I was actually very surprised that Sandra Bezic commented last night on Battle of the Blades that the beauty of Mahler was that all the elements were beautifully interwoven. Marina described that she wanted to show a romantic relationship between a man and a woman. But in the end without VMs skating skills - the choreography does not come alive. Granted not every CD, OD, SD and FD that VM have done is a masterpiece - but hell - these guys have never done filler and have always tried to be somehow original. But without the strong basics - that goes out the window.
In the end - I am glad to know that there are other skating fans who do appreciate what VM bring to the table. Perhaps VM will not get the results that they want this year - but this team will be remembered...

  24. So it appears that Sandra Bezic has confirmed on her twitter that on Battle of the Blades - tonight that the Olympic programs chosen for the contestants are Bolero, Moonlight Sonata, Love Story and Mahler's 5th Symphony. And with a picture of Sinead Kerr doing a floor version of the goose (on her twitter) - I am guessing she will do Mahler with her partner...oh the hypocrisy - months ago after the 4CCs stoppage and basically disrespecting VM on twitter - now she will be skating on of VMs programs..even if it was assigned to her..that's rich...and seriously VM are still competing...wtf Sandra Bezic...I hope Marina is getting some $$ for CBC using Moonlight Sonata and Mahler...apparently Gordeeva is appearing on tonight's episode and then you will have Sale as a judge, Pelletier is making a special appearance...would not shock me if VM make an appearance as well..
Sinead Kerr perhaps after Battle of the Blades is over - a nice gesture would be to compliment VM on their programs this year - a little payback...

    1. Yeah, I still don't know what that was about - Sinead Kerr first out of the box claiming Virtue and Moir interrupting 4CC's 2013 hurt the perception of the spot. What was her agenda? She had one. Because good lord, the list of things that hurt the perception of the sport number in the dozens before we get to Virtue and Moir, and I also find "perception" disingenuous. Perception, nothing. There are actual aspects of the so-called sport that damage it's status as a legitimate sport. The anonymous judging. Ice dance. Plenty.

Maybe her choice of Mahler is her way of trying to make up to Virtue and Moir for her tweet.

      Delete
    2. Didn't she also say in the tweet that she thought they were the best dance team? Sometimes people don't think their statements through all the way to their logical conclusions...

    3. Perhaps ironically, Sinead is the only one with a partner who could even possibly pull Mahler off. Can you imagine lumbering Jessica and her partner attempting it? That would have been wrong on so very many levels.

Scott and Jessica reunion if VM make an appearance in the audience? Oh the good old days!

I think Jessica could handle it. There was never anything wrong with her skating basics, nor her lines, nor her ability to hold nice positions. Who knows what the deal was with all her problems during her competitive days. They seem to be more related to things like work ethic, losing focus, an unwillingness to follow through with learning new stuff. Her skating in and of itself is very smooth and powerful. She's a wasted talent.

    5. For me, personally, watching Dube on BOTB is a the usual weird experience. She has a completely inoffensive persona - nothing too self-protective, not defensive in the least, just cooperative and matter of fact, no matter what the feedback. And then the skating is so freaking sluggish and unimaginative. She's got basics a lot of skaters would kill for, including on BOTB, but you can't wallow in them. Her programs and performance seem as if they take place in slow motion, and it also seems as if she (and Bryce, if he's their coach (and, I suspect, choreographer) aren't paying sufficient attention to what she needs to be doing to show off her partner. We've all seen the D&D repertoire - it doesn't do much to have Brian Savage present the D&D repertoire. They need to figure out stuff for HIM to do that she presents, and so far that hasn't happened.

    6. 1:47, have you seen Jessica on BOTB? The girl who skated Blower's Daughter and won a World bronze she is not...

      Delete
    7. 1:50, true. But you can see the foundation that she's wasted. She's a great basic skating talent. Natural deep edges (true deep edges with long, smooth, powerful blade run). Very secure. Great natural balance - in her center of gravity there seems to be a plumb line taking her to ice centered, letting her land stuff that would topple other skaters. And very strong.

For me these basics, offset with her results/many performances, illustrate her disappointing work ethic.

When you see her and Bryce skate in 2007-2008, it is so obvious they've worked their asses off. Even at Canadians (where the short was screwed up) 2008 where they won silver, it's clear some technical vector was at work making elements askew, because the skating was stronger, the way she carried herself was steadier and tighter, and the way she and Bryce tracked each other was textbook. They'd put in the work, so were able to right themselves by worlds.

Ever since then she's hedged. She's a huge wasted talent. In pairs it seems that strong basic skating and clean elements can carry you to the top - on that basis there's no reason she and Bryce couldn't have been regulars on the World podium and hit the podium in Vancouver, but she always trained just short of where her comfort zone was, so there was always instability and sloppiness in competition. Her native ability was such that at times someone less talented but more hardworking would unravel and she and Bryce would make the podium, but it was still far less than they should have achieved.

At the same time, the two of them have always, always gotten along off ice, and as long as Jessica doesn't keep lowering the bar (for example, gain another fifteen pounds and train even less, should she and Bryce find themselves fielding show skating offers), that aspect - the D&D off ice aspect, should stay on track.

    8. Bolero, Moonlight Sonata, and Mahler are all curious choices for a show like BOTB because they all depend on pure skating skills moreso than even most competitive figure skating programs. In other words, it isn't just hockey players who would struggle to make this choreography work - try any top 10 ice dancers or pairs teams with the exception of V/T and V/M.

Love Story is different - grey costumes, snowball fight, we'll get it. Something like Witt's Carmen or Yagudin's Iron Mask would work better for a show like this (not to take away from those classic programs at all, but they have bits of iconic choreo that it would be easier for a non-skater to emulate).

      Delete
    9. The first triple twist on BOTB just happened. Considering Dube spent half the season with Wolfe with a double, I'm thinking you can guess it wasn't her. Amanda Evora.

      Delete
    10. In the end, this was a great experience for Dube. And if having Bryce coach her helped mend the friendship between them - well perhaps she now has better closure from the figure skating world...Undoubtedly being surrounded by the likes of Marie-France Dubreuil and Shae-Lynn Bourne on the show also would have been a positive experience.

    11. This is anon at 6:54 pm - okay now having the chance to look at last night's episode with both Jessica and Sinead being eliminated - at the end of the episode they each had a chance to speak with their partners. Sinead was a class act and undoubtedly would be invited back to participate. Jessica was loopy to say the least..yes English is not her first language but she came off as some loopy contestant on American Idol - not a two time Olympian...I actually was embarassed for Brian Savage who gave a heartfelt speech....oieee...it was priceless....not exactly how someone who was interested in studying communications would present themselves on national tv..

    12. Yeah, she started out decently enough but then checked out. Her skating looked sluggish and she was just push button the whole way through, and there's just no excuse for her demeanor when she made her exit.

  25. Isn't it lovely how Tessa is making sure the "hugging before performances" is explained as part of the general skating-preparation. Heaven forbid anyone should think they actually want to, you know, *hug.*

It never fails to be weird that they say their connection is a marketing tool (idiots, what celebrity ever tells about a marketing tool that is being foisted on the public?). But then one or both of them runs in to try and clarify that what we're seeing is *not* that connection. It's just - eh - part of the performance.

They have no idea what they're doing or what they're talking about when it comes to PR or public personas. If they would SHUT UP about anything related to "marketing tool" or "connection" or "relationship" they would be so much more appealing.

Here's where Tessa brings up the hugging:

    1. That's actually a really good interview. I wish they'd give more of those. Also, they've always talked about how they utilize those hugs to sync their breathing, I don't think there's anything wrong with pointing that out.

    2. I also liked it a lot, especially as it pertains to their training of the different muscle groups and how that relates to their edges. They would make amazing commentators, coaches, or choreographers someday. Not only do they inherently GET it, they're able to articulate it and in interviews and most importantly, translate it into brilliance on the ice.

I just can't imagine Meryl and Charlie even beginning to have this type of conversation about skating.

    3. Hmm I guess the next step for Tessa is to say any hugging after the end of the music is also part of the performance...it's also good to know that hugging before Stars on Ice performances should not be misconstructed...lol...Ms. Virtue - last time I checked - no one was really asking you a question about hugging...oie...

    4. "We started this thing at the Olympics in Vancouver where we’d hug before we stepped on the ice, and we breathe slowly at the same time. We want to feel totally in unison and in synch, something critical for our skating partnership. We even say we want our hearts to beat as one, which comes after being together for so long."

      Sounds totally platonic.

    6. Hugs can be multi-purpose. ;)

I actually thought that article was pretty brilliant. I particularly loved how they talked about the use of proper mechanics, training smart, etc. It's fantastic counterprogramming to what DW surrogates spew.

    7. Yes, well. V/M are connected as skating partners, spouses, and have mixed their DNA into the form of a child.

But the soul connection? That belongs to their training mates. It's very moving and all. Tanith can't get enough of it.

What you did there. I see it.

    9. Overall it's a good article - but the hugging part does make me chuckle - because it's basically a relaxation technique and it has become a ritual for VM. Synchronized breathing may be taking it to the next level..of synchronized swimming, lol...nothing wrong with it...

    10. Anon at 4:30 pm - thank you for making me laugh - good way to end the weekend!

    11. Yeah, I figure hugs are multi-purpose and Tessa is stressing their utilitarian purpose for this interview about preparing their bodies as athletes. And, after all, she's correct. She and Scott have plenty of opportunities to hug outside our view. This one they do in sight of everyone. I think they do it because of the reasons they say, and also for comfort and focus reasons.

It's a good interview and shows them off as sharp, smart, and articulate people, which makes how they present themselves the rest of the time even more irritating.

From an athletic standpoint, I'm curious about Tessa talking about incorporating her glutes. One would think CES was common among figure skaters, but it's not. It's not unusual among track and field athletes, among soccer players, but from what I've read, it's a bit unusual for dancers and for figure skaters, both of whom work their legs intensively, but don't (habitually) develop CES. But Tessa did. I wonder WHY she didn't incorporate her glutes when she began skating very young, and I wonder what went off the rails in general. If dancers didn't incorporate THEIR glutes (i.e., if Tessa didn't transfer dance mechanics to skating mechanics), then it would seem dancers would develop CES more than they do. So this seems very Tessa-specific, versus Tessa-as-dancer becoming skater. Back when she first had it, it was said a pair of boots derailed her. They didn't fit properly. I wonder if she compensated and only when the issue set in did she realized the compensation was creating CES. It remains an odd story. She's the best ice dancer out there and there's a lot of crap technique in ice dance, but she's the one who got CES.

IKR. It's enough to make me cry. They have all the goods - elite training, smarts, knowledge about their sport - to fill hours and hours of interviews and documentaries. Instead, it looks like their upcoming TV show is mostly a big heaping of fake-drama garbage with a little bit of skating thrown in. Aaarrrghhh.

    3. It's not as satisfying an article as it might be, because he goes on to call her an intelligent commentator. Which - how would he know? He knows nothing of figure skating outside performance value and somebody didn't fall.

He's right that Wilkes was carrying water for the ISU and also not disclosing her apparent conflict-of-interest. I wonder what her tune would have been a few years hence when Skate Canada's Olympic gold medalists claimed to be intending to compete in the Grand Prix when they were expecting a baby and knew, and Wilkes knew, they wouldn't be there. Possibly faking an injury to get out of is bad, forthrightly letting people know you're not doing it is bad, but letting people think you ARE doing it (with the help of Wilkes) and letting an event be promoted and tickets sold partly on the basis of your participation when you're never going to be there is fine? Maybe all Wilkes cares about is that tickets were sold. She was certainly pushing Scott and Tessa to say they'd skate at Canadians 2011 when she "interviewed" them at that faked up book signing. Her agenda is get the public to shell out the money, never mind if the featured attraction is actually going to show up. Perhaps that was her problem with Kwan and Cohen. They let it be known too far in advance that they wouldn't be doing it, before the public could be fleeced.

  28. Tanith could connect with Ben using just hands:

"The most important thing I always do before taking the ice at competitions though is holding onto Ben's hand for at least 5 minutes before the warm-up. This way we can sense how nervous the other is and what we need to do to help them through.”

Virtue and Moir also hugged before a performance of Dark Eyes back in the 2008-2009 season - looked the same as their now official hug.

    1. Gotta love the differences between actually platonic skating partners and fake platonic skating partners.

I love to use BA as an example of how an actual platonic, actually close friends skating team behaves with each other when pointing out all the ways VM's behavior is not platonic.

    2. Scott thinks all his posing and event-attending with fake gf cancels out all the public VM behaviour. It doesn't. Which is one of the reasons all the sham activity looks and feels so slimy and repugnant. Not that they care, obviously.

  29. Remember how Scott used to constantly, constantly pretend he got into figure skating because of the girls? I wonder now if that crap was also to telegraph how heterosexual they want us to know he is. Scott was a very eccentric, hyperactive, guy who got into skating because he's from a skating family and he wanted to be like his older brother. I read an interview recently from an actor who said it's such a fallacy when men go "I did it because of the girls!" Scott was a little kid already surrounded by women. When he met Tessa that was it.

IOW I think he got into it because he was always going to get into it - his family ran the rink. He stuck with it because of his partnership with Tessa. They sell the "girls" thing because he's officially not with Tessa and because no Moir can be gay. We can't even think it.

  30. Observe how in the case of a truly platonic ice dance team, the glamorous girlfriend lowers her profile. She doesn't raise it and proactively attempt to steal focus from the team. All of her public energy goes to promoting Davis White as an ice dance team while not addressing her own relationship with Charlie White. What Scott and Tessa do makes no sense for a platonic couple, but they're the both ways having it duo.

    1. Tanith is in this for herself as much as she's in it for Charlie. Tanith has been angling for a broadcasting job since forever. D/W's win is her meal ticket to stardom in the US public. She's doing everything the way she needs to in order to make everything work for herself. Good job, I say.

    3. I'm not sure I buy that Charlie White is any kind of meal ticket to stardom for Tanith Belbin. I know guys who know shit about ice dance and couldn't pick Charlie out of a police line-up but know who Tanith is. If she wanted to get involved in broadcasting I think opportunities would have come her way regardless of whether she was dating Charlie or not.
