Virtue and Moir attempting one of
Papadakis & Cizeron's L4 competitive lifts.

Virtue and Moir in the Globe and Mail

Concluding paragraph.
They’ll have other projects to announce soon, they said, and new collaborations to begin. The next act for Canada’s Tessa and Scott may look a lot different from what we’ve seen so far.
These bitches. No it won't. Even if they decide to lift the veil on their more compelling unseen collaborations, new is not the word for any of them.

I'm discussing this article out of order because I did like this part near the end:
Moir and Virtue are a little less eager to do their own choreography. They skated one of their pieces at Pyeongchang – a flowing, elegiac tribute to Gord Downie, set to The Tragically Hip’s Long Time Running. But “we tend to steal from ourselves,” Moir said; and when working alone, they miss the perspective of what Virtue calls “the outside eye.”
Good. Long Time Running was, to me, as meh as most of their show dances, and the Gord Downie backstory was no help.

The article's author, Robert Everett-Green, observes that ice dance inhibits dancing, because you can't "stop and dance."

No worries. Ice dance rules and criteria have worked hard to get us to where teams are mostly stopping and "dancing". Our current world champions, Papadakis & Cizeron, seem to feel that the skating part of what they do is a pretty unfair expectation of Olympic athletes as extraordinary as themselves. That's for show boaty, cheap ass vulgarian panderers like Virtue and Moir (right, Madison Hubbell?).

Ice dance rules and regulations have developed to where teams are incentived to ignore as much as possible the fact that the medium is ice. Ice dance has eaten its own tail at this point.

Tessa says:

The impetus for our movement as a pair should be quite similar to that of the ballroom world. But we have just that forward-backward plane of motion with our blades. It’s very tough to transfer ballroom technique onto the ice, to give the illusion of the proper hip motion and position, with the speed and glide of the blade.

I don't know why Tessa bothers. Except that Virtue Moir have to execute proper technique to have a prayer, and other teams do not. Well, the Shibs have to do it too.* If it's not done perfectly, we hear from analysts - who have just cribbed the info from something they've overheard - that the reason the Shibs and/or Virtue and Moir didn't win was flawed execution of a technical detail. Other teams can ignore the whole translate dance into that forward/backward plane of motion bit, and break world records. Other teams win via creating "a special feeling." Virtue and Moir had to perform per archaic technical standards that don't apply to ice dance anymore, that have been stripped from the game.

When Virtue and Moir were not awarded the gold medal they won at the Sochi Olympics in 2014, we heard that they were artists, but Davis White were the technicians. When, via a magical, perfect storm that thwarted political intent, they crushed the field in 2018 Pyeongchang and were allowed to eek out a win, the narrative positioned Papadakis Cizeron as perhaps not the strongest technicians, but divinely gifted artists. Denied acknowledgment of both technical and "artistic" high cards over the course of 8 years, Virtue and Moir are currently positioned as cunning performers who win by hiding careless execution behind a cold, bold, and somehow unfair confidence. They're scary. And kind of cheating. They're practically Russian.

I don't think Virtue and Moir care, though. They have the gold, they won gold, even though it's the only gold medal win I can think of that is both deserved, and sticks in the craw. It's pretty much living in my craw.

You have to figure out how to incorporate the lateral movement and still keep the flow and integrity of the skating,” she said. “We try to give the effect of ballroom, but we often have to get there through very different means.

Well, they have to. Others, no.

Article:
In dance terms, their Moulin Rouge routine had a ballroom base, a lot of balletic movement in the arms and bits that looked more contemporary. It’s the last category – the one least favoured by the conservative standards of their sport – that they most want to expand in their non-competitive ice dancing.
"Bits that looked more contemporary" is one of my favorite ice dance terms.

Those are descriptive generalizations. But, as we all know, ice dance is now whatever you want it to be, as is only proper in an elite Olympic sport. Conservative, it ain't. If the right deals are in place, you can slop it up out there however you want.

P.S. - are we still describing Papadakis & Cizeron as humble flower childy skaters too sensitive for the competitive world who somehow win because they summon magic, but it's all about the feeling for them, or can we jump on ahead to where they actually are - we deserve it all, and any contrary result is inherently unfair?

*Which makes them both better off than a number of other teams who are never going to get on the podium no matter what they do.

  1. I have read online in two separate interviews where Katia Gordeeva praises the ice dancing team of P/C and I can't for love or money understand why. G/G's style in pairs is much more similar to V/M's style in ice dancing in terms of their excellence and precision. Does the figure skating world acknowledge V/M's superiority amongst themselves off the record, at least?

    1. All/most of the juniors look up to V/M and can't stand P/C. Regarding fellow legendary ice dancers, Zhulin and ponomorenko have been vocal in support of V/M overtheir rivals Gordeeva follows tessa but not P/C on instagram and likes a bunch of tessa's photos of her skating with scott so unsure if she likes V/M skating or not ,probably. Yuna kim said V/M were her favourite ice dancers and that she loved their mahler. Tarasova has always been neutral on them. I have seen pictures of yuzu fanboying over tessa. so yeah. although Oksana grishuk and T/D seem to like to downplay V/M because oksana is a jealous stuck entitled up cunt (literally the russian gabi) and because T/D are P/C shills (dean was paid by the french fsa to choreo for them)

    2. I always found it interesting how all the junior ice dancers don't even discuss any other ice dancers when it comes to their idols. No mention of T/D no mention of any of V/M's rivals. just V/M. Literally no junior team was calling D/W their idols when D/W "won"their olympic and world titles no junior team was calling P/C their inspiations when P/C won back to back worlds not a peep from the youngsters. when V/M won their 2017 world and 2018 olympic title they all lost it and were gushing over V/M. he'll even when P/C "won" over them at the gpf the juniors were rushing over to take selfies with V/M ignoring P/C, lol.

  2. P.S. - "are we still describing Papadakis & Cizeron as humble flower childy skaters too sensitive for the competitive world who somehow win because they summon magic, but it's all about the feeling for them"

only their 80 something becky sues and french Mental ward escapee fans on goldenskate and fsu believe this silly nonsense everyone everywhere else including figure skating stan twitter and tumblr sees right through them and their "ethereal" "perfect" skating.
and P/C are dragged through the mud there.

Why P/C's downfall will happen soon:
    - ISU rule changes not in their favour
    - SD next season they can't do if they tried
    - New better junior teams coming up
    - Lack of dedicated fans (fanbase small contains older people who don't know how to use social media leaving them fandomless jokes that people drag on tumblr/twitter/instagram)
    - More and more people are seeing their cunty behaviour
    - Audiences now don't like them as much
    - Russia will not allow another non russian team to win again for a fourth olympics in a row. A deal will be made to not have P/C win the 2022 OLY's.

  3. Does anyone know what V/M's following is like in Russia amongst figure skating fans there?

  4. I know that Russians prefered VM greatly during their rival years to DW and it has been the same when they competed against PC in the last two seasons.

    1. The Russians know good ice dancing when they see it, and they saw it in VM

    2. I speak Russian and read Russian skating forums regularly. There are Russians who have been VM fans since 2005. VM are definitely more popular than DW. You can really tell from the reception they got at the Moscow show when Tchernyshev joked "I don’t think they’ll agree to move to Russia.” Many fans were disappointed with VM come back, though. They hated the programs for the past 2 years and found them trashy. Also many believe that their skating skills are not what they used to be in 2014, Tessa’s edges are often flat and Scott is out of shape. PC are actually liked by many skating fans in Russia because many never liked the difficult acrobatic lifts in ice dance. A lot of VM fans have also become fans of PC and consider the teams to be equal.

    3. Those "fans" can keep their junior lift out of synch poor posture asshole's then. P/C still have yet to have a fanbase that is also large and dedicated and its been 3 years since their "rise". The shibs even have more fans and popularity then them. The russian juniors still look up to V/M specifically elena I. real fellow ice dancers who aren't P/C shills or over zealous cunts know V/M are far superior than P/C and D/W. Outside of P/C's cult which consists of a bunch of prudish boring lonely cat lady figure skaitng forum users P/C are seen as jokes.

    1. The blogger loves them as skaters but hates them as people because she believes that they have been a romantic couple for years and have a couple of children that they hide from the public.

  6. Has anyone seen the video from Japan that allegedly show VM privately acting like a couple? I haven't seen it and nobody who has the video wants to post it publicly, but does it mean VM are now open about their relationship? And where are the kids these days? VM have been traveling for months now, do they even live with the kids or are they with Tessa's mom now?

    1. What video? What does it purportedly show? Is the source who claims to have seen it legitimate or just some tumblr anon?

    2. It ended up being posted on YouTube but was taken down. It's just a 10 second video a fan took of them walking down a street, holding hands and hugging. It's so out of focus and dark that it could literally be anyone.

    3. Anon 10:00 But how holding hands and hugging proves that they are a couple, they do it all the time even off-ice LOL

    4. It doesn't prove anything. Scott has a new girlfriend anyway so the video clearly didn't mean anything

    2. How can one be called an Olympic Champion when they haven't won gold? "Champion", as far as I understand it, is the team who wins gold and last time I checked it wasn't Gabi. That title belongs to Tessa and Scott. Another one of those "just who do you think you are" moments.

  9. So I watched this interview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cemPrHONLm4 on french TV with Papadakis/Cizeron and James/Cipres (from March 2018 after the Worlds) and they asked them what song they listen on repeat these days. P/C's favorite song was The Joke by Brandi Carlile. I found the lyrics. Does anyone else think it's about V/M and the fact that V/M won the Olympics over P/C? Or is this idea just nonsense?

"Don't ever let them steal your joy
And your gentle ways, to keep 'em from running wild
They can kick dirt in your face
Dress you down, and tell you that your place
Is in the middle, when they hate the way you shine"
    ...
"Let 'em live while they can
Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind
I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends
    And the joke's on them
You get discouraged, don't you, girl?
It's your brother's world for a while longer
We gotta dance with the devil on a river
    To beat the stream"
