One of the worst parts about following ice dance lately is having to actually watch it.

Is it that Gabriella can't be fussed about the
free leg on the exit or she just forgot?
The fact that Papadakis & Cizeron are serenely untroubled by program mistakes doesn't mean the judges should be, but talk about screaming into a void.

Their characteristic "can't be fussed about this unison stuff" also happened in the free.

Remember this crisis?

It is clear that figure skating looked at the emergence of Virtue and Moir in the early-mid-0s as a looming issue. Two very young ice dancers, spectacularly talented, versatile, musical, wonderfully charming and good looking, passionate, and, most of all, unambivalent about each other, skating and competition. They were built to last. If things had been allowed to proceed without interference, they would be the winners of four Olympic gold medals - Vancouver, Sochi, Pyeongchang and, coming up in 2022, Beijing. Nobody came along in that time who could challenge them, and even ten years ago skating knew the odds of a team with the goods to challenge them coming along the pipeline were slim. There is still no team to challenge them.

This could not stand.

So the sport did two things – pretended another team had accomplished stuff on the ice that had not been accomplished (key points, steps executed correctly, stable, synchronized elements, speed, unison, edges, skating) and scored accordingly, while dumbing down the requirements to eliminate any advantage Virtue and Moir gained from their ability to achieve extraordinary skating feats on the ice. A third component was propaganda, easily accomplished in an enterprise where even the journalists who cover it know little about what they're covering and continue to be incapable of distinguishing performance (i.e., apparent energy, "flair", charm, theatrics, emoting, personality) from content.

We got gold medalists in Sochi who held hands at arms’ length throughout their program interspersed with piggy back rides and dragging, and we currently have dominant world champions who skate two footed, flat bladed and frequently out of sync but look so floaty when they do it. This pacifies the mediocre skaters whose whining begins to sound as if having a lot of talent and being really good at something is an unfair advantage, unfairly awarded. Shouldn’t working super hard to overcome or packaging yourself around a handful of inherent deficiencies get more points?

This article:

How do you make tango so fluid

Has two of my favorite quotes. One is a question from the 'journalist'. "Usually tango can be quite stiff and formal. Yours is completely fluid. How do you make passion so fluid."

How did you make the tango the exact opposite of its requisite sharp, staccato characteristics so it is performed like every other program you've ever skated?

And from Papadakis: "Four years ago, we didn't start with an Olympic medal hope. Then we realized it was possible."

What was their first clue? Even they are saying they knew they weren't skating to an Olympic level but suddenly were getting scored as if they were.

If you took a snapshot mid-twizzle rotation of any pair of ice dancers more often than not there will be moments out of sync, and then they catch up by the exit, but these two. What did this sort of execution win in Pyeongchang? World record? Explosive GOEs?

***

I’ve get a wry enjoyment out of Gilles and Poirier, still doing their thing all these years after Poirier controversially jettisoned Vanessa Crone, still essentially occupying the same spot, still cheesy. If Poirier had known he'd be treading water in 2019 with the same goal just about the same distance away he might have jumped off a building.

  1. Hear, hear ... V/M could have continued but the judges/ISU have spoken. Oh sure, they tried after Sochi. And they tried again at Pyeongchang. Feels so darn good that V/M proved (through their skating) AGAIN why they're the best. P/C stans can whine and rant all they want but video proof is hard to deny so they resort to propaganda of who's skating is more organic, raw, etc. *barf* V/M had both art and skating skills in spades and they can't stand it. Unsurprised by the constant chatter of them retiring even before v/m themselves would announce it. Like I always said before, it's all pagentry and politics now

    1. I meant, they (judges) tried after Vancouver OG win, and again as v/m's determination towards OG at Pyeongchang. Btw, thank goodness on their foresight picking a more dynamic music piece there

  2. Zhurankov and Bobrova's commentary was really entertaining.
Zhurankov: How is it possible they got 4.15 GOE on the step sequence?
Bobrova: That means the judges gave them +5.
Zhurankov: That's what I'm talking about. It's not that great, also according to the technical panel it wasn't that clean it only got a level 3.
Bobrova: No, the judges don't look at edges.
Zhurankov: So they judge it based on emotional impact? Then what kind of technical mark is it?
Bobrova: The judges evaluate it whether they like it or not. In twizzles they were really close together like they do them in a dance hold, it was very original and beautiful.
Zhurankov: I'm sorry, but it was the only beautiful thing in this program.
Bobrova: They got level 1 and level 4 for Tango Romantica. I would have looked at the second section because it's more difficult and I got the impression that it wasn't a level 4.

    1. FD commentary:
Bobrova: Well, everything is a level 4. In the one foot step sequence she got a level 3 and he got a level 4. But even I could see Cizeron's toe pick on the bracket so he shouldn't be getting a level 4. I will be very strict now, let's criticize them now.
Zhurankov: Why are you provoking me? I'm trying to keep myself under control. I'm barely holding myself.
Bobrova: We expect something great at this level.
Zhurankov: Have you seen this type of lift before, yes. Have you seen this type of spin, yes.
Bobrova: They're trying to change their style because they've been criticized for it.
Zhurankov: So you think they changed their style?

    2. I think the more journalists start to look hard on those levels and call out on them, the better accountability on the judges doing the judging. I'm tired of watching and hearing how their lifts or twizzles or whichever you pick is equivakent to how it's done against v/m and yes, even compared to others. It's disheartening because you/we all can see it. And they (judges) nonchalantly turn on us saying we don't know any better or becausr they have the monitor to see what's what. BS when when we can call out on what we can already see shown on TV. Infuriating ...

Time and time again there are bits (news/videos) out there that the Canadian couple had shared with the public about the technicality of their movements. Most recent is that Moulin lift (somewhere on Instagram)

V/M can skate to ANYTHING. Funny Face and Pink Floyd, not to mention the Russian composers in Sochi, were not easy music to skate to or interpret. Yet V/M could and did skate with great skill and beauty. Always such joy to watch them. P/C were grossly overmarked in their uptight short program in South Korea, and did not receive the deductions they should have. They're mediocre ice dancers at best and are propped by the judges. You are entitled to think otherwise but I'm just not seeing any brilliance there.

Therefore, pure fake/fiction just to drum up viewers to fall into the trap of fake drama, fake fights, etc? (Who knows maybe they like the money since being in competitive skating is very expensive so they'll take what they see it as reasonable way to raise funds for their next round of their future seasons) Secondly, why would they sue this blogger anyways? One, They might not even know of its existence and two, do they even have time? Maybe they're also smart enough to see and not engage in a pointless activity to search up every bit of gossip or fake news about them - because they already know ppl will talk crap about them anyways. It's already happening on social media and YouTube. A part of this blog contents cater to those who want to vent and gossip about their relationship like the tabloids do.

    2. Uh... Anon @ 10:42, I'm pretty sure Piper isn't Paul's type... and Vanessa wouldn't have been either, if you get what I'm saying.

      Delete
    3. Paul definitely chose Piper for the looks since it's all they talked about when their partnership just kicked off. But he's surely has never been into Piper that way... for obvious reasons. Though he still treats her million times better than he treated Vanessa. He's more attentive, he listens to every word she says in interviews, he often spends his free time with her and clearly enjoys her company more. None of it has ever implied to Crone which is weird. They skated together since childhood and she had never let him down as much as Piper did just in the last two years. Finally, karma punched him in the face for this and also for how disgustingly overscored Gilles/Poirier have always been compared to much more talented Paul/Islam. I can hardly see them making podium at 4CC and they still consider themselves Worlds podium contenders? Hilarious.

  25. You're on this person's blog. Part of this blog contents dedicated to vilifying (or to some & this blogger) Tessa and Scott. The claim is that they're shitting us about their relationship. That's why you read comments about shamming, being married, having children, etc. on this blog. (In earlier years' archives). The blogger has almost always participate in commenting with posters here about this topic. Posters say they love their skating but not so much about what they say (truly) about their relationship to each other. Some content here points out about what the skating world (I.e judging) is doing/about other skaters and their skating. Hence you get the occasional anti-Tessa and Scott here spreading their vitriol. (There's one now lurking here lately who's pretty coco)

  26. Scott gave an interview yesterday from his new married girlfriend's place in Tampa where he dragged young skaters like Alina and Gabby Daleman,, snapped that he's annoyed by the dating question, and called PC a once in 100 years talent. Serious question, is he okay? A lot of his behavior lately has the markings of a mental breakdown. And with Tessa working, she's not going to be there to pick him up.

    1. He didn't say he was at his girlfriend's place. For online ubers Tampa = girlfriend. For the average person Tampa = vacation destination. The fans get the message loud and clear but there's nothing official, just like the Lawes sham. And, as usual, they are way too heavy-handed and don't even bother to make the timelines believable.

I wish people would use their critical thinking skills and not be so easily manipulated. They're playing you like a fiddle.

    2. Most fans do (publicly) buy into the relationships, but the veterans are also pointing out the patterns across EVERY one of these. There's even a girlfriend starter kit post circulating which is just hilariously dead-on. There are comparison photo sets showing how he does the same stuff with these girls at any of like three different beach vacation locales -- last week he was in the Dominican again, bringing us full circle.

    ABOUT IDOLS

Katsalapov : - Of course, Scott Moir ! Because this is the most real live dancing on ice, without a single unnatural movement! This is what I would like to watch as a spectator, without thinking at all about silly ribs. She and Tessa are talented from God and not reach out to them? Well, the same Charlie, Charlie White, when we were training at the same rink, told me that Scott and Tessa hardly needed to train. Unless the partner had problems with legs, she had to do operations. And the same Charlie worked for days to rise to this level. Recall how Virtue / Moir made twizzles in a spiral, not covered by the rules, and then the following year the rules were already adjusted for them. In any case, everyone has his own way. Just someone can not use talent, and someone just have a talent not to get out of the ice and work without stopping.

Shinitsina : - Their views? Just to the point feel each other. Marina Zueva told me that as soon as Scott touched Tessa, she immediately changed, and her body began to move.
