The butthurt on Cizeron Papadakis
still makes me ragey. How totally unfair
to have skating and dance in ice dance.
Shouldn't the sport
had thrown even more points at their errors
while dinging VM for imaginary mistakes? The
stress they went through all season knowing
it wasn't going to be 100% a gift! Only 98.7 or so.
Back before their first Olympics, I wanted Virtue and Moir to have the same resume as G&G  - they were in a similar universe of their own. When they weren't allowed to take home the gold in 2014, I equivocated with myself that G&G didn't compete in the 1992 Olympics, but rather the one after. Then VM won 2018, justice had snuck in through the back door, and I began seeing their resume as on par with G&G. I'm only talking resume, purely out of context.

There is actually an area where Virtue and Moir's resume stands above G&G's, and above not just skating teams, but all figure skaters who ever competed in more than one Olympics. Have any other Olympic figure skaters been perfect in every Olympics in which they competed? G&G's LP at Lillehammer had a number of small glitches (while their nearest competitors had made their own roughness a feature, not a bug, and G&G's technical purity was their feature, so of course, many fans considered the result unfair). The media is not really allowed to acknowledge that Virtue and Moir were perfect in Sochi, but they were. That is extraordinary. I don't think there are any other figure skaters as absolutely purpose-built for that level of competition. Scott sang through all of it. (It's not noted as much that Tessa sang with him in the Pyeongchang fd, but she did.)

It's heartbreaking in a way that the most extraordinary ice dancers in history competed at a time when being good at skating was actively discouraged by the sport, where it was considered problematic, where everything on earth was done to artificially level the playing field to the point of humiliation.

I appreciated this from them:

VM address abuse-free coach_student environment

  1. I agree wholeheartedly with this article. I have watched V/M's programs from Sochi so many times and they are absolutely perfect. There are no other skaters who could come close to interpreting the Russian classical music of V/M's long program so exquisitely and yet they did it with apparent ease.

I do not understand why (I have read somewhere)Gordeeva has apparently expressed an appreciation for the French team given the French team's obvious inferiority.

Does the author of this blog think that there was favoritism toward D/W over V/M leading up to Sochi by the coaches? Or strictly by the judges/some journalists/certain parents-with-connections?

    1. Gordeeva follows Tessa on instagram and has liked a bunch of her photos so atleast she isn't some bitter sour V/M anti *cough* T/D *cough*

    2. T/D are not anti V/M. And your posts are full of hate. I wouldn't be surprised if Tessa and Scott weren't deep down ashamed of fans like you.

    3. T/D are Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, the insurance clerk and the policeman who put ice dancing on the map. Their advanced age (60 and 59) seems to be an invitation to some people to pour scorn on them. But, having won 16 gold medals (British, European, World, Olympic) suggests that they have nothing to be bitter about. And check out their performance of "Song of India" (1984) for a look at an early version of the V/M lift that everyone was talking about at the last Olympics.

    4. looks like we found a local beckie sue here,Okay so calling V/M's skating busy, saying they won solely because of a dress malfunction and then inviting their rivals on their skating show, paying VM dust during the 2018 olympics isn't bitter or sour? Im sure if V/M heard the things they said about them they would be pissed at T/D no me. go back to fsuniverse and your house full of cats.

    5. Anon is such loser thinking coming here and commenting such bullshit makes here think she/he has the higher moral ground. go watch your wheel of fortune reruns while you figure out how to use social media properly.

    6. Dear Cherry Blossom at 9:30 AM: Thank you for recommending that I watch Wheel of Fortune. I looked it up and I think that it might be a little high-brow for me. As for figuring out "how to use social media properly," I welcome your suggestions. Again, thanks.

    7. Torvill and Dean lacked passion in their performances. They skated like brother/sister. They seemed bitter when they lost 1994 gold (got bronze). Their skating doesn't even come close to the technical and artistic superiority of Virtue and Moir.

    8. Hahaha, the "artistic superiority of Virtue and Moir" ..........

    9. Torvill and Dean skated like a brother and a sister. I have never laughed more.

    11. cherry blossom, Torvill and Dean congratulated V/M on their win and career (check their tweet just after Olympics). Anyway they have had fantastic career, they still work together after all those years, are the best friends, have lovely kids. I'm sure they have other things on their minds then thinking about V/M. Because not everything revolves around V/M, even though some of their fans think so. But you better stay in your world of hatred. It's a perfect place for you!

    12. The only skaters who have conveyed true passion and chemistry "as one" on a level that was both memorable and exquisite are Gordeeva/Grinkov and Virtue/Moir. Torvill and Dean didn't have that quality - they were technically precise and innovative, yes, for their time, but they did not skate "as one".

      Delete
    13. Yes, V/M have more artistry than P/C. Welcome to the outside of FSUniverse where P/C are laughed at and no one likes their skating. its a bit of a shock since you have been indocrtinated in the one place where they have real fans.

    14. "but they did not skate "as one"." Hahahahahahahahahaha. Obviously you have never watched them. Never ever was there an ice dance couple who skated more "as one" as T/D. And V/M although fantastic skaters are not this couple.

    15. On the contrary, I have watched Torvill and Dean skate many, many times. They are missing something in their skating that G/G and V/M have in abundance: skating "as one", exquisiteness and elegance.

  2. How are the V/M's kids? Do they have only 3 or the 4th was born after Olympics? Surely, she was pregnant during Olympics.

    1. Of course, Tessa had her 4th baby after the Olympics. Why do you think V/M didn't go to Worlds? All the kids are now tucked away in the Witness Protection Program.

    2. There are a few very compelling photos of Tessa in late 2010 where she appears pregnant, especially where she's wearing this halter top, leopard print dress. I believe she had a daughter in Dec 2010? Maybe there was a second child post Sochi (only because they seemed to have disappeared in that time but have no proof of that). They certainly convey the sense of being a long established couple in love. So none of this "married with kids" theory would surprise me if one day proven publicly to be true. I think they would have had far greater marketing success if they were more open about their affection, like G&G were.

    3. I think every single one of their kids was an "I didn't know I was pregnant" situation. Easy enough to quietly remove the baby before she noticed and have them raised by a quiet skating family with no wi-fi in the religious hinterlands of Western Ontario -- until they've achieved their olympic goals, that is.

      Delete
  3. It seems quite possible they at least have a child from late 2010.

    ReplyDelete
  4. And if they do have children, their skating success is even that much more amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Regardless of whether they have children or not, their skating is exquisite on so many levels. It is a beautiful thing to watch them skate and I am proud that they are Canadian.
