There are usually about six subjects* I avoid on social media or the news, and figure skating has started to become one of them:

A recurring gif on my twitter timeline.
Applies to so much stuff.
Last month I was on a political blog, squinting and skimming so as to avoid certain key words, when one participant mentioned he was taking a break by watching figure skating. I knew this meant the Grand Prix Final, and as mentioned in last month's post, I knew it would turn out the way it did for VM, and didn't watch. It's not that VM had a rougher skate than usual, although, along with the Shibs, more is expected of them just to stay in contention for the podium than is expected of Papadakis Cizeron, who are only subject to the "don't fall down" requirement. Hell, more is expected of juniors.

It's the Papadakis Cizeron scoring I can't tolerate. The widespread promotion of all things gaslighting has taken its toll, and Papadakis Cizeron are the proverbial bridge too far for me this year. It's only skating. Who needs it.

I didn't even enjoy Virtue and Moir's new ending in their Nationals free dance:

Well, not as much. They're splitting the difference. She's kind
of playing dead with her character up there, but if you
want to overlook it, you can. Then she gets out of it and
they emerge from the program as themselves. Oh my God,
what an improvement. That quiet, nuanced ending
they had before - that sort of thing has no place in ice dance.
And I was not expecting this:

Iliushechnika and Moscovitch. How it Ended.

I guess an entire glass door fell on Dylan? It didn't miss
any part of his important pairs equipment.
His hands. His back. His knees.
MTM V.2 go to the Olympics.
Whatever happened to schadendfreude?
What is this era called? The neverending winning streak of things that suck? I don't even have anything against MTM V.2. That's too small a thing to matter.

I don't think my recent lack of tolerance for a whole bunch of stuff in the public realm has to do with overloading, but rather with apparent futility.

I'm not mad at them. Happy for their fans and for them. At least
they and their fans care  about the skating part of skating,
and they had a beautiful performance.

Still, I wonder what it takes for an American figure skater to get in so good with the USFSA that they'll score your nearest competitors (who are actually better than you) 20 points lower just to enhance your reputation after another meh skate (Davis White/Shibs), kick you off the Olympic team even though you defeated your nearest rival and have delivered internationally (Mirai Nagasu / Ashley Wagner). What have the Shibs done wrong? Not spread the (literal) wealth? Kept their lips to themselves and off highly placed asses?

The USFSA had no problem spreading the wealth - the Shibs win the short, Chock & Bates get scored so they are first in the long, and HD win the event. That's some craven CYA right there.

The micro-expressions. :(  My Shibs:

Finally:

Some schedenfreude right there.
What is this, Nagasu's third Olympic cycle? Keeping her off the team last time certainly paid dividends.

I am just curious as to why someone like Gracie Gold - big athletic ability but not nearly as good a natural skater as Nagasu - got the full force of the USFSA and its resources behind her for so long despite being more erratic than Nagasu ever managed.  Well, I'm not truly curious, and neither Wagner nor Gold are shit, but, speaking generally, the whole narrative does fall into the "let's depress and dismiss anything with inherent quality while promoting a lot of bullshit." Bullshit has always been around, but I feel the shitting on good stuff and pretending it sucks it new, and not just with Virtue Moir. In fact, they were sort of the canary in the coal mine and ahead of their time when it comes to the experience of being the best and then along comes something terrible and let's pretend it and the best are neck and neck.

  1. I attending Canadian Nationals and heard in the arena from the family of another Cricket Club skater about Dylan's accident. Yes, a door fell on him and he was very injured, only cleared to skate about a week before nationals started. He was far from 100% power at nationals. The results at nationals were correct by how everyone skated in the event, but it was just heartbreaking to watch. Of all things, a door literally fell on him. It's such a freak thing to happen, so of course it happened to a team like I/M. That said, if I were being lifted, I'd choose a hurt Dylan over Mike M. any hour of any day of any week. I wouldn't trust Mike to hold me up to screw in a light bulb. I thought he was bad on video, but after seeing him and his lift technique live and right in front of me, I think it is inevitable that Kirsten is going to end up hurt at some point in time.

V/M's SD live is one of the greatest things I've ever seen in skating. They are just so much better than everyone else that there is a huge gulf between them and everyone else. Personal preference, I actually liked the new ending to the FD better. I am someone who was not thrilled with the choice of Moulin Rouge for their music, but this should be what wins V/M their second OGM (that should really be their third if we talk about what happens on the ice). It even checks the stupid non-sense boxes that so much of the press and so many of the fans obsess about these days. While on the subject of ice dance at Canadian Nationals, I was also there in 2014. As a whole, the quality of the field has taken a steep dive since then. I felt like I suffered through the rest of the event just to get to watch V/M skate. W/P have regressed since 2014. Piper still can't ice dance. There were a couple of teams that didn't make me want to stab my eyes out, but there was some bad ice dance in that event.

All in all, I think I actually preferred what D/W did to what P/C are doing. D/W at least pretended that the technical side was what was important. They were busy doing stuff out there. It wasn't correct and it wasn't ice dance (ice running? ice scampering?), but it was something. P/C are pretty much doing nothing out there. D/W at least pretended like technique mattered. P/C here are something else: http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2018/01/18/264872452/papadakis-cizeron-try-to-keep-things-in-perspective

I especially love how Gabi acts like you can ignore correct technique because it's not going to bring about world peace. It's also something that when it was D/W vs V/M, the script was that D/W were the technicians and V/M the artists and the technique was what mattered. Now, with the script this time around, V/M are the technicians and P/C are the artists and the artistry is what matters. Apparently what matters is that the script be written however it needs to be so V/M are the team that the judges don't want.

V/M are to ice dance what Michael Phelps is to swimming and what Simone Biles is to gymnastics. Both are revered for the talent and even Biles in the judges sport wins what she is supposed to and should win. V/M are about to be sacrificed on the second Olympic alter for a team who's ability to make the FD cut should be in question.

    1. In the interview http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2018/01/18/264872452/papadakis-cizeron-try-to-keep-things-in-perspective Gabriella said: "The way you place your foot on a blade of iron on a frozen piece of ice won't save the world and won't change your life and your relationships. We're not country leaders trying to save the Arctic Ocean." I think that the part about the country leaders she was referring to the fact that V/M will be Olympic flag-bearers for Canada. I think she hates that, because it's a power shift for V/M. (I personally think she hates them, there is no "friendly atmosphere", just rivalry, they are competing for gold, for christ sake). So much bullshit in these sport interviews. I laughed when i read this: "We try to do what we do in the best possible way, and to add a touch of emotion, and maybe philosophy as well." Philosophy? What? Does she even know what she's saying? Hahaha. (I would like to know if this interview was in english or in french and then translated to english, because the meaning could have been lost in translation.) I think that P/C are so stuck in their own arses they can't think clearly anymore.

    2. I totally agree. Looking back at most of their interviews, there never was acknowledgement of any teammates (unlike v/m or others normally do). At least what I've seen of them. They've always projected a "look at me/us" attitude. Another point I find nauseating was they seem to think they are the only couple who embodies their music and movements better than any ice dancers today. Come on...Really? As far as I could see, all skaters embodied their programs with their chosen music well or better to sell it us audience and judges. It's the shady judging that's a problem.

  2. I have been a fan of H/D since the very early days of their partnership in 2011, but the nationals victory felt hollow to me. Their shamming has reached a point where they've made V/M and Moirville look restrained (and I include the tv show of lies in this--if you added up all of the minutes of sham that they have posted as instagram stories, we're exceeding the run time of V/M's stupid show). V/M never made it look like they were living full time with a fake SO. H/D have mentioned their sham SO's a lot more frequently in mainstream press (V/M had the show and Jessica had that People magazine thing about most beautiful people, but they weren't name dropping the sham SOs in publications like Cosmopolitan or Sports Illustrated.) Their behavior has been a big wet blanket to enjoying their success in recent years. Sham never stood in the way of my enjoying V/M skate, but H/D used to behave better and I expected better out of them. Also, while they are good skaters, I don't think they've in interviews put as much focus on the technical side of things--they certainly spout a lot about magic and feelings. I also think that they are capable of more difficult choreography than they are being given it Gadbois. Their DSC-era programs were certainly more difficult.

As for ladies at US Nationals, Mirai should have won. Bradie can land jumps, but the rest of her skating is completely lacking. NBC/USFS must have their blonde skating princess though. Since they broke Gracie, they had to find another one ASAP. I'm hard pressed to believe that she's going to score anything close to what she got at Skate American and US Nationals once she's out of the country and up against the big guns internationally. In both the European Championships and 4CC coverage on the NBC-owned NBC Sports and Olympic Channel, Bradie was presented as perhaps being a contender for the bronze medal. After watching US Nationals, 4CC, and Euros, and being at Canadians, I'm hard pressed to believe that she's going to be able to surpass any of Zagitova, Medvedeva, Sotskova, Kostner, Osmond, Daleman, Miyahara, Sakamoto, and Dabin Choi (from South Korea). I also suspect that Mirai is going to fare better than Bradie with an international panel. Basically, I don't think she'll even be top 10.

We've spent a lot of time over the years talking about all of the insane things Skate Canada does as a fed (which, after nationals, I don't think they're so much actively working against V/M as they are doing nothing--they're not getting their younger skaters developed. The top group were developed on William Thompson's watch. There's no reason for SC to not be using all of the senior B spots and other opportunities available to them to develop as many of their skaters as possible. It's not happening.) However, IMO, USFS makes it's own dumb decisions. Bradie is their latest. I sometimes feel like there's a competition for world's worst skating fed and USFS and SC are constantly saying "hold my beer."

  3. 7:25/7:41 again.

Strictly speaking of skating, someone pointed out to me that in that incredible opening move of the FD that when you watch Scott, you notice he does not move when Tessa does that move that even watching live I cannot figure out how she's doing it. Tessa launches herself into that lift with rotation, and he stays perfectly still. Their talent and ability is other worldly.

Another stray thing I want to mention after watching 4CC and Euros is that the Ben Agosto who comments on lower ranked teams is not the same as the guy who is commenting on the teams that are part of the political game. If it's a lower ranked team, he will point out exactly what was done or what should have been done to get the levels on elements. He will point out when a team jumps a turn. He will point out when someone steps onto their flat and then forces the edge. He will explain that a missed edge on a step sequence is the same thing as falling on a jump. As soon as we get to a team that is part of the political landscape, it all goes flying out the window and we're talking about feelings. If he can point all of this out with the teams that aren't part of political ball, then he sure is also seeing what's wrong with P/C.

  5. Article about V/M, the part about "people think you are married" made me laugh. At least they have toned down the "unique relationship" narrative a bit: http://www.chatelaine.com/living/olympic-flag-bearers-virtue-moir/

  6. With the caveat that I haven't heard the whole conference call, these quotes from Madison Hubbell on P/C and V/M are uhhhh something:

"Hubbell on Papadakis/Cizeron: "For me, they are the kind of skating I want to see in ice dance. It's power, but it's also elegance. And they've put a lot of work into the precision. Just naturally, they have such beautiful lines."

"Hubbell on Virtue/Moir: "They're the quintessential, full-Hollywood team. No matter what music you give them, or what choreography, they find their place inside of it. They don't always skate perfect, but they make you feel like it's perfect. They get lost in their own world."

    1. Wow. It's almost like she's repeating the comments of some ice dance commentators who criticize V/M and think P/C are gods. Did someone blackmail her to say this? What a load of crap. And I thought she likes V/M. I thought 2014 Olympic season was a circus show (D/W vs V/M), but this is just another level, and not only in ice dance, but pairs, ladies and men as well. I think there is some corruption, bribing and blackmailing behind the scenes. I will never take figure skating seriously from now on and probably will stop watching it.

    2. Utter bs from her...guess we know in order to get favour for their "turn", one have to kiss a** and get with the program, so to speak. I truly believe the skaters are complicit because they fear getting shafted (as you can see) by the judges. I'm done with FS. I'm actually skipping watching Olympics all together.

    3. 5:33 here and I want to add some context to the above, because I don't think it's just "Madi playing the game." It's worth pointing out, one, that H/D and P/C share the dread Baden as an agent (though so do W/P, who aren't out there propping up P/C).

Also remember the handful of people who declared that H/D should have beaten not just W/P but even V/M at Skate Canada. Doubt that went missed by H/D.

As has been posted here before, H/D and P/C started slobbering all over each other in 2014 when they had TEB together and paraded the newfound BFF-ship on Instagram, cropping G/P out of podium photos, talking about how H/D needed to go to Montreal, sharing stupid inside jokes.

And after H/D did move up there, Madi and Gabi struck up the bestest closest friendship ever. We know what it looks like when training mates have friendships (or at least do friendly things, like attend sporting events together). Madi and Gabi, a pair of grown women -- and Madi had not made a habit of posting like this before Gabi -- take it up a notch, frequently sharing heart emojis and expressions of love for one another on each other's Instagram posts and sometimes giving us gems like this:
      https://www.instagram.com/p/BQJ0f7cB8l8/
      https://www.instagram.com/p/BVEzt6xFvr4/

(Bonus: this post and its comments really sum things up GREAT https://www.instagram.com/p/BYhIPoVljnD/?taken-by=splashmadison)

H/D AND their families are pretty obvious about how thirsty they all are, and it's really off-putting because they are a talented team, they are a team who deserve by their skating itself to be in podium contention...but they are so in bed with the corruption that it's hard to root for their success.

  7. We can blame I/M's misfortune on the glass door, orrr... how about the fact that they had garbage programs this season, skated poorly in every event they competed in since the season began, and just aren't that good? I kept saying the last point while everyone fawned over their Josh Groban schlock last year, and everyone was so bowled over by their supposedly amazing ~Artistry~ that they continued to assert that I/M were definitively Canada #2 and would probably be Canada #1 very soon (instead of one fluke-y placement about D/R at Worlds when D/R were very injured). Nice try! Please play again!

    2. Wow, Anon 6:46/6:48, way to miss the point completely. I/M had a rough, inconsistent season and a rough Nationals, but that doesn't diminish the fact they have better SKATING SKILLS, and yes, ARTISTRY, than D/R and MTM combined, no matter how much you hate their programs.

I/M are generally inconsistent throughout the fall and then peak at nationals and worlds, so there's no reason to believe a reasonably clean long would have earned them a spot on the Olympic team.

And as for D/R, take away their big tricks, they are a poor skating team, and even their tricks are more often than not generously overscored. There was nothing flukey about I/M's placement at last year's Worlds, if the judging is actually scoring the things its supposed to be scoring as per the rules.

    3. Commenter may also be a Seguin/Bilodeau fan as I've seen some misplaced antagonism between S/B and I/M fans previously. S/B are a very nice and pretty consistent team and should certainly be Canada #1 in the coming years, but they've also struggled significantly with injury in the last couple of seasons and even by their own admission it's stagnated their progress to some extent. My main objection to the pair, and I don't have many, is that I'm just not into the Gadbois material. Yes, their lyrical music picks have traditionally been cooler than Josh Groban, Cinema Paradiso w/ vocals aside, but the choreo is Marie-France from a mile away. Don't like it in dance, don't like it any better in another discipline. Even their "edgy" short this year looks like a Hubbell/Donohue exhibition scrap, and naturally they worked with Samuel Chouinard on that.

(Big fan of their work with Shae-Lynn and Shae Zukiwsky, though.)

Interestingly, I/M credited Marie-France along with David Wilson on their Tango Jalousie short, but also said where she was really helpful was in giving them an idea of incorporating structured dance into a pairs program. That might be a better use of her ability than creative lead.

    4. Anon @ 6:06, yes, I agree that a reasonably decent long would have gotten I/M an Olympic spot. That's not what I was saying. I'm saying that all those who basically thought they had an Olympic spot locked were not recognizing the fact that they actually aren't that good, on top of their extreme inconsistency. Clean vs. clean, yes, they are a better team than MT-M, of whom I am definitely not a big fan. However, MT-M made huge improvements this season and I/M were moving backwards instead of forwards. Even if they had been skated clean, their original programs this season (the SP they skated during the GP rather than Tango which they switched back to for Canadians, and the dreadful Phil Collins LP) were choreographically void and did nothing to show off their strong point, which is skating skills. MT&M had programs that showed them and their improvements off much more obviously, even when they didn't skate completely clean.

D/R don't have the greatest skating skills in the world, but their SS are not as horrible as people make them out to be, and to say that I/M could have beat a reasonably clean D/R at any point last season or this season is laughable to me, especially considering that a "relatively clean" skate from I/M, in comparison, would usually include at least two falls (on both sets of SBS jumps).

I don't hate I/M at all and I would rather have seen them in Pyeongchang than MT/M. But it was never going to be a walk in the park for them to get there, glass door or no glass door.

  8. Tarasova's and Averbukh's discussion during GPF was hilarious:

Tarasova: I’m talking about this season, Canadian took what was lying on the surface, didn't dig deeper.

Averbukh: And the French selected what they’ve been doing three years in a row.

Tarasova: No, it's like impressionism. Each dance is a different painting that each person paints in their imagination.

    Averbukh: It's the same painting.

    3. I'm anon at @8:56. I remember Averbukh criticized DW's recycled elements and that no one will remember their programs. After DW skated he asked the other commentator: "What is this dance even about ?" The other commentator didn't know what to answer. He was speechless after VM performance. He praised the seasons, said that he himself would have never dared to use a music like that, and that the performance is true mastery. He ended with " it doesn't matter how the judges place V/M because in history they'll always be number one". He also called Carmen a "diamond" and that it undeservingly lost.

    4. He's so right. Many of DW's programs were forgettable. I remember seeing a video of Scheherazade music laid over their tango skate- the program fit seamlessly. Sort of shows how cookie-cutter and generic it was.

  9. Real classy you are! Reality is it IS politicking (again) that's pushing skaters whom many see less deserving. I can name a few more other ice dancers other than V/M who aren't marked as they should. Yeah, come to us next time when it happens to your precious team (which I take is P/C). Any decent place to even remotely discuss what's happening, be it skating skills or scores, are suppressed or outright called out with vulgarities. So much for proving why you team should win. It's still SKATING SKILLS that should matter. We can see what's being presented on ice and play back those moves. And connect them to the GOEs. Yet again we do see blatant fudged judging. So take it as you will. We're still not blind nor stupid!

Here again VM are having to change the integrity of their programs. Unfortunately the outcome is already predetermined. I had a terrible feeling they were going to be screwed out of another OGM.
I'm still not exactly sure why the judges let them win everything last season. However this season they are no longer allowed to be the best team on the ice anymore? When those who actually watch the skating know that P/C do not hold a candle to V/M.

    2. 6:15 Are you talking about 2014 Seasons FD or 2018 Moulin Rouge FD? (Because in the Seasons FD they had kind of similar lift as Carmen, but not the same one). I think V/M will keep the Carmen lift, why wouldn't they? They are not like this, they stand behind their vision.

    3. 6:15 So what lift was/will be changed for OGM? I think Moulin Rouge program will be (at OGM) the same as at Canadian Nationals, but V/M might surprise us and change something, we will see.

    5. It's the Olympics so there's bound to be some greater need to push for a win (and that's not V/M. No matter how good their dance materials are, really) To me, last season was a gimme. V/M wins all in exchange that you-know-who will win the coveted medal this season. As for the poor excuse/reason to ask of V/M to "tweak" their lift is nothing more than a blatant, subtle "suggestion" that they'll be penalized in their scores one way or another, if still included. I highly suspect if the win leans towards you-know-who when V/M skate clean, the reason given will be "well, they (v/m) did change their lift last minute so it's still "a work in progress"" and therefore, to justify the lower (suspected) mark when the time comes. (Never mind that news of other team is that they too are tweaking their programs. But will be given a pass even if it's not clean) There you go...

    6. Lift change 3.0 for VM before a major competition now. First edition- Mahler. 2nd edition- Farrucas 20 minutes before Worlds

    7. @10:51 I'm so glad someone mentioned it. It seems people have forgotten about the powers that be trying to screw VM over their lifts. People on twitter were like: Why change it now, when no one had any problems with it during the international circuit? Well, because they tried it before. They would screw VM over the goose's dismount. They didn't say a word just waiting for the olympics but their plans somehow reached VM and they changed it in time. Then, they tried to cheat VM out of their World title. They had a few days to think, and since they couldn't attack the goose... the farrucas lift! Did they have any problems before? NO! Did they say something a few days before the competition? NO!
I know they changed the lift at the last minute and I believe it was because once again someone let them know what people had planned. No one will change my mind that the intention was to let them skate and THEN call it illegal.
VM are smart. They know what's going on and they won't give them a chance to do it with something that may sound legit to anyone who doesn't know about the politics.
And one more thing: The Carmen lift was never meant to be in the olympics. I can't remember where I've seen it but I've seen this modified lift before (along with a new lift - a backup maybe?). And if I'm not mistaken, it was already being worked on last season (I believe it was in some fluff piece).
VM are covering their bases. They are daring the judges to not give them the gold once again. And even though I think they will be robbed of the gold once more, I believe this time will be different. Because VM know it's a possibility and they want to take down the people responsible. I see a huge scandal happening if they don't win. Resulting, finally, in the fall of Didier.

    8. 8:47- You might have seen it in HPC? It was there for a second in their Roxanne doco.

That's what I hope for- for the corruption festering in the ISU to be dealt with publicly, because they have clearly shown that they don't give a damn if it's done quietly. It all hinges on VM skating clean. But for some strange reason, I feel like VM won't skate clean. I don't know why I feel like that, I just do.

    9. 3:47 - No, I saw it many months ago. Dunno if it was last season or earlier this season.

There is a possibility they, unconsciously, end up sabotaging themselves. Maybe to try and justify what they know will most likely happen?

I hope they are strong and skate clean!

    10. 6:02- Possibly. I do hope they have clean skates at these Games though.

Did you also see that they took out that move in the middle of Roxanne that all season long I thought might be counted as a "throw" if anyone wanted to sabotage VM. Such a shame really. It fit into what they tried to showcase and now they've been suggested to water down their content.

    11. 6:40 - I don't think anyone told them to water it down. I think they are just eliminating ANYTHING that could be used to sabotage them. I actually liked their original FD better (I love the original ending SO MUCH!) but I think they are being smart. Let's see what happens.

  21. This is a must watch!!!
This is a true "reality show" for V/M. Their amazing work powerfully displayed.

  22. they should have kept the version of the carmen lift they had debuted for seasons in finlandia trophy. far better for this program and she doesnt straddle his face which i always thought looked unattractive.
